  Jordan Nichole Carreras

  My time as a shark has been unforgettable and undoubtedly shaped me into a better student, friend and person all around. Coming into NSU I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare and felt that a degree in biology would give me the tools to achieve my goal. In addition to enabling me to pursue my desired career, the curriculum designated by the biology department reignited my passion for science and encouraged me to seek opportunities to further my involvements in the realm of biology. One of my most prevalent academic involvements began with the course Intro to Protein Modeling growing into the opportunity to become a peer mentor and attend conferences that would expand my perspective of biology tenfold. This opportunity is one I'm grateful for because it made me more confident in my abilities as a student and taught me that anyone is capable of becoming a scientist, especially if given the right tools. As the biology department inspired confidence in me, I feel called to inspire the same confidence in others.

  Harsh Chheda

  My time at NSU was very meaningful and I am thankful for the many opportunities. As a pre-dental student majoring in Biology, I was able to learn from great professors in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. Through this, I was able to get to know many of the professors through research and working as a Laboratory Assistant. I was also a part of the Honors College to take various honors courses and participate in the Undergraduate Student Symposium. The Honors College led me to my research opportunities in the Department of Chemistry as well as in the College of Dental Medicine/Center for Collaborative Research. The vast student organizations at NSU were also significant in my growth as a student. Overall, the Biology program at NSU has impacted my academic career immensely as I am now a first year student at Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine. I am grateful to NSU for preparing me to embark on a journey in dentistry and am proud to be an Alum. Good luck to all of the current students and definitely take advantage of all of the opportunities that NSU has to offer!

  Jovanni Gomez

  Since a young age, I have always loved science. This passion for STEM is what led me to embark on a path towards a career in medicine–– not only by my intellectual curiosity, but also my desire to make a positive impact on my community. Serving both the Broward community as a medical assistant and the Miami-Dade community as an EMT further ignited my passion for healthcare and service, granting me the opportunity to work with a variety of healthcare professionals while providing support to those around me.

  As a student at Nova Southeastern University, pursuing my master's in biology with a health studies concentration provided a unique opportunity to work under mentors that are driven to see us succeed. This academic endeavor serves as a steppingstone towards my ultimate goal of attending medical school, with one of its strongest feats being its ability to integrate the range of information we learn.

  Aside from my career endeavors, I thoroughly enjoy cooking new recipes, hitting the gym, and tanning at the beach. Fins up!

  Attending NSU's BS in biology and MS in biological science program was transformative for my academic and career journey. These programs provided me with a comprehensive understanding of biological sciences. Through engaging coursework and hands-on laboratory experiences, I gained valuable knowledge and skills that laid the foundation for my professional endeavors. Currently, I am a first year Ph.D. student at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and I have come to appreciate how the classes and experiences at NSU have seamlessly aligned with my current academic journey.   Zachary Lawrence

  NSU provided me with all the opportunities I needed to succeed in my studies while growing professional. I took advantage of several unique courses to do so, which included an internship in a field I was considering and a research course to conduct my Honors Thesis. I was also sufficiently academically challenged by the traditional courses, allowing me to score high on the MCAT and get accepted to medical school. I now am attending at EVMS. My advice to undergraduate NSU students reading this is to always believe in yourself and trust the process.

  Alec Mayo

  The MS Biological Science program was instrumental in allowing me to be where I am today. Coming out of my undergraduate degree I was full of ambition and yet had no clear path as to how I was going to achieve my goals. Not only did the MS program allow further myself and my studies, it also gave me a platform to expand my horizons and discover the career that I can now proudly say I am a part of. Had it not been for the MS program at NSU and the wonderful professors I would have never found out about the Anesthesiologist Assistant program, nor would I have been as well prepared for the challenging curriculum of AA school. The MS programs rigorous curriculum gave me a solid foundation which allowed me to excel in AA school and gave me the confidence to purse my goals. Had it not been for the MS program I would not be where I am today. The experience and knowledge that I gained has proven to be invaluable and I couldn't be more thankful.

  Marco Rabines

  Coming to NSU my first year, I was not the most effective "studier" in my opinion, nor did I demonstrate much affinity towards learning in the traditional fashion, via lectures, reading, or taking notes. At this time I was unaware of the vast trove of study techniques that some of the best and brightest minds across the world use today. My mentors in the Biology program were some of the first individuals who motivated me to step away from my comfort zone and experiment with different avenues of learning. As I became more aware of techniques such as spacial repetition or the pomodoro method, my confidence in my own ability to learn grew exponentially. The faculty wasn't just knowledgeable; they were approachable mentors, always ready to guide and inspire. The hands-on experiences in labs and research projects were pivotal in developing my practical skills and fueling my curiosity. To current students, especially those with dreams of medical school, my advice is to embrace the journey. Balancing academics with other pursuits and community involvement is more than just a checklist—it's a blueprint for personal growth. Remember, resilience, adaptability, and a true passion for helping others will be your greatest allies on this rewarding path to medicine.

  NSU has been an interesting journey for me. At first, it was challenging, but when God started sending angels into my life, the road became an easier path. I had wonderful staff members and professors who impacted my life and pushed me to my greatest potential, like a caterpillar evolving into a beautiful butterfly. I am very grateful for my classmates who helped me to grow as well. As a Biology major, my time at NSU has shaped me in ways I never thought I needed to be developed.

  As I continue on my next journey to getting my Master's degree and later applying to D.O School, my advice to others is to not compare or measure themselves to anyone. Be the best version of yourself and be willing to step out of your comfort zone to find that version. Embrace the pain as it brings your tenacity and determination. And no matter what life throws at you, just don't give up. Your words have power, so speak only positive things over yourself, no matter what it may look like, and let God do the rest. In Him, you gain strength. You got this, just don't quit. It's not how you start the race that matters, it's how you finish. As long as you finish, you have succeeded.

  Juliet Akkaoui

  The MS in Biological Sciences at NSU is a great bridge program for any medical or research profession. I first heard about the program from one of my favorite professors at NSU, Dr. Raja. Our cohort was the first group to graduate from the program and we were all very close. The 1-year experience is accelerated in pace, but it prepares you for the flood of information you will receive in the first year of medical school. Currently, I am a Ph.D. student at FIU, and we take first-year courses alongside medical students. The program is structured in a way to touch upon all the different topics such as immunology, anatomy, and biochemistry. All topics you will revisit in the future again. The professors at NSU not only help in their courses but also offer career advice and mentorship. It was because of their guidance I found an opportunity to work in the NSU CCR laboratories under NIH funding. This is how I found my passion for research. Thank you, NSU! Fins up!

  Sarah Ballarin

  NSU’s biology program made my time as an undergraduate an overwhelmingly positive experience. Key to this were the faculty that so genuinely cared about their students’ success. I am incredibly grateful to my professors, particularly Dr. Schmitt, Dr. Crump, and Dr. Garcia for their support in my endeavors. The opportunities provided for research (shoutout to SEA-PHAGES) and the real-world applications and career development that came with it were game-changers. This, in addition to campus involvement, are the highlights of my undergraduate career. I am thrilled to be returning to NSU to earn my D.O. and wish all current and future students the best of luck.

  Olivia Cantalupo

  The biology and marine biology professors were the best part of my NSU experience. They were all so knowledgeable and passionate about their respective subject matters. The marine biology program prepared me very well for a career in that field, while the biology program allowed me to choose my interests and follow that path. I also appreciate the support of student organizations from Halmos. As the president of two clubs located within the Halmos college, I felt that I was supported very well by advisors, professors, and faculty.

  Lauren Douma

  The biology program at NSU provided me with a solid foundation for my Ph.D. education. Teaching methods used by professors at NSU allowed me to retain information, contributing to my success in graduate courses. Additionally, the opportunity to assist professors with scientific research at NSU greatly prepared me for conducting independent research. My advice for current students is to take advantage of as many opportunities as they can in undergraduate school. I started my undergraduate career pre-med. After being exposed to genetics research at NSU, I changed paths and decided to pursue a Ph.D. in genetics and genomics.

  Michael Egozi

  NSU provided me with the flexibility to intertwine my commuter lifestyle and career oriented disposition with my school curriculum. I held mostly full-time jobs while I was in school, each of which contributed to my career working in the clinic and in research. If it were not for the transparency and accessibility of administration I would not be where I am today. NSU has the flexibility to become that of the students desire, which is what makes it an extremely fitting school for most of the passionate students that walk the campus (or take online classes) everyday.

  NSU's undergraduate biology program provided me with an outstanding preparation in biological sciences. The background knowledge I have learned throughout my time at NSU will be of tremendous help to me as I continue my studies on track to becoming a dentist. The curriculum within the four-year program is intense and challenging, but not impossible to overcome. I'd like to thank my professors along the way for allowing me the opportunity to demonstrate my resilience amongst difficult times and conveying to me their love, curiosity, and admiration for the field of biology. I would especially like to thank Dr. Emily Schmitt Lavin, Dr. Andrew Ozga, and Dr. Eben Gering for providing me with their valuable knowledge which I will carry with me forever. As I continue on my path in life, I will always look back to my time at NSU with great admiration, knowing that it has shaped me into the individual I am today.   NSU has provided me with many opportunities to grow not only as a student but as an individual. I am grateful to have participated in various extracurricular activities such as research, Science Alive, Delta Epsilon Mu, Honors College, and many more. Many of these extracurricular activities have helped shape me as a well-rounded individual outside my classes. I am also thankful to have fostered great relationships with some faculty, including Dr. Emily Schmitt, Dr. Christi Navarro, and Dr. Madhavi Menon. To all the current students at NSU, I advise using your opportunities to your advantage and making the most of your time at NSU!

  NSU has opened doors for me, in ways I never knew they could, and I am so grateful.

  I was a non-traditional student, having come to NSU with an associate's degree from across the street at Broward College. I thought I knew how to study and what it was like to research. Boy, was I wrong.

  NSU brought me face-to-face with the way I studied and by the end of my three years at this university, I am walking away with improved studying habits and I have also learned the art of self-care and work-life balance. Coming from a single mother and immigrant household, there were many obstacles, yes, but it was getting through them gracefully and diligently that really taught me valuable lessons.

  It really took me three years to understand that not everyone's journey is the same and the journey in college (academically) is not a straight line. There were goals I had set for myself before starting college and, in some ways, I am somewhere different than what I anticipated. The most important thing, though, is that I am happy where I am and I would do it all over again if given the chance.

  I believe that this is the key to success. You must be passionate about what you're doing, you must find the excitement in it. If you don't, you need to change something to feel that way.

  For example, many people would find cellular and molecular biology daunting at even the sound of the name, but it doesn't have to be that way when studying this subject (or any subject, for that matter). It's ok to have fun and make light of something that is traditionally serious and "scientific"...this is what the professor of that very same subject taught me and my classmates. Fully immersing yourself in the subject you are studying is key. (Yes, you might have chosen biology as your major and therefore you enjoy it, but that doesn't mean it is easy and you will succeed on the first try. As with other subjects, it takes time and dedication.).

  I would like to share the opportunity that NSU's biology program offered me to be a part of my second year: the SEA-PHAGES program. Through this program, I was able to connect with like-minded peers and professors with one goal in mind: to contribute to the nationwide, undergraduate-level project for biology students to isolate bacteriophages and annotate their genomes. In total, we annotated the genomes of two bacteriophages and the links to our publication (in an academic journal) and to their genomes are listed on this page.

  I wish I could include all of my "academic adventures", but I'll keep it short for now.

  I would really like to thank my professors, Dr. Emily Schmitt Lavin, Dr. Patricia Calvo, Dr. Julie Torruellas Garcia, Dr. Katie Crump, and Dr. Navdeep Gill for their time in teaching me as well as for their support in my academic journey.

  I also thank the Farquhar Honors College and Dean Andrea Nevins as well as former Honors College Dean, Don Rosenblum. The courses offered by the Honors College provided me more insight into our world and society, as well as the people in it (something especially important for a pre-medical student like myself to learn). Some notable honors courses I took were "Genetics and Genealogy" with Dr. James Doan and Dr. Emily Schmitt Lavin, and "Introduction to Protein Modeling" with Dr. Emily Schmitt Lavin and Dr. Arthur Sikora. Both courses also provided me an end-of-the-semester project to talk about and are also linked here, as well as published on the NSUWorks website.

  Thank you NSU, and a special thank you to the biology department that welcomed me with open arms and changed my perspective on learning science.

  Hello, fellow NSU alumni!

  I hope this post finds you all in great health and high spirits. It's hard to believe that it's been two years since I walked across the stage at the Hard Rock Stadium with a degree in Biology. Time flies, doesn't it? Today, I want to share my journey with you all and brag about where life has taken me since graduating in 2021.

  After earning my biology degree at NSU, I was eager to pursue a graduate program, but I needed to figure out which field would best align with my passion and interests. While enrolling in the Audiologist's Assistant Program Diagnostics Course at NSU in 2022, I discovered my true calling – Audiology. I was instantly captivated by the intricate workings of the auditory system and the profound impact hearing healthcare professionals have on the lives of their patients.

  With newfound determination, I am now in the process of applying to a Doctorate of Audiology program. While my current job as an audiology assistant at South Florida ENT is temporary, it provides valuable hands-on experience to prepare me for graduate school.

  In my role, I assist audiologists in diagnosing and treating hearing disorders, conduct hearing tests, and help patients understand their treatment options. It is a privilege to be part of a team that positively impacts people's lives every day, and I look forward to continuing this journey in my pursuit of a doctorate.

  My journey from NSU to pursuing an AuD degree has taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of finding a career that aligns with your passion. I'm grateful for the education and support I received at NSU, which laid the foundation for my success in audiology and my pursuit of higher education.

  I am also taking this opportunity to thank my professors and mentors at NSU for their guidance and encouragement. Your dedication to your students' success has not gone unnoticed, and I carry the lessons I learned from you with me as I work toward my goals.

  To my fellow NSU alumni, I encourage you to pursue your passion relentlessly, just as I am. Whether you majored in biology or have succeeded in a different area, NSU education has prepared you to make a difference in the world. Let's continue to support each other and celebrate our achievements, no matter where life has taken us.

  Gabriela Alejandra Lopez

  NSU’s biology program played a crucial role in preparing me for medical school. It provided me with a well-rounded understanding of core sciences as well as more challenging courses such as anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology. NSU’s supportive and knowledgeable faculty in the biology program also played a significant role in my future endeavors. Amazing professors such as Dr. Emily Schmitt Lavin, Dr. Santanu De, and Dr. Christopher Blanar helped shape my academic and personal development. Their expertise, guidance, and mentorship challenged me to explore new ideas, and provided me with valuable advice throughout my journey as a pre-med student. NSU provided me with a glimpse into the diverse career paths within the medical field that I am able to pursue and helped solidify my decision to pursue a medical degree. My advice to future premed students is to take your goals at your own pace and always keep in touch with your professors and friends!   NSU's undergraduate biology program not only helped me academically, but helped shape me into the man I am today. Though the program was rigorous, it taught me how to be disciplined and stay on track. I know I'll be well prepared when I pursue my PharmD to become a pharmacist in the future. Through this program, I met some amazing people and phenomenal professors as well who made me feel comfortable and motivated at school. To the current NSU students, stay positive, don't give up, and don't be afraid to rely on your peers.

  The biology program at NSU has so much to offer, from a demanding and challenging curriculum that equips students for graduate and professional school to community service opportunities. What I appreciated most were the supportive and passionate professors that were always open for discussion and encouraged me to take up academic and service opportunities to be a well-rounded individual. These opportunities to expand my knowledge helped me question and most importantly, truly understand why I wanted to pursue the career I had chosen. As a first-generation college student, having my professors be part of my support system throughout my college experience was invaluable. The biology program's engaging and interactive laboratory experiences also prepared me well to be an undergraduate research assistant at NSU's College of Pharmacy. As a current Master's student at NSU's Biomedical Sciences program, my undergraduate journey created a solid foundation in the biological sciences.

  NSU's biology program prepared me well for a career in medicine. I thrived in the small classroom environment in which many students were also pursuing careers in healthcare. The faculty were keen to our interests and incorporated them into their courses. I was fortunate to engage in community service through Science Alive! and explore my interest in research through protein modeling, both projects under the leadership of Dr. Schmitt.   At NSU, the biology program prepared me well for my continuing studies in medical school. Not just with the content, but more importantly the necessary discipline and studying skills I developed through my time in undergrad and the biology program. It is important to always remember that no matter how well you prepare for the future, you may not always be ready for it, and that is okay. Part of the journey in academia and in life is figuring things out as they come, but you must always put your best foot forward while doing so. I have faced many hardships and failures during my time at NSU undergrad and the College of Osteopathic Medicine, but each one has shaped me and made the end goal that much greater.   Adewale Ebenezer,Jones

  I was scrambling to save my career that had been bedeviled with series of unfortunate events. Prof Roopnarine "saw" something in me. She encouraged me to apply for the Masters of Science program. Willy-nilly I did. From the first day, I was very rustic. I could not even submit my classwork successfully! Then,I began to really enjoy the program. It was like a nuclear explosion of spreading activations as my memory exploded. This program is full of wonderful Professors. Notable among the excellent Professors are Prof Jaffe, Reza and Saleem. Jaffe will work you to bits but will reward you handsomely if you follow. Reza is very benevolent but he will present a difficult facade. Saleem is very nice. However, he will lay a foundation of neuroscience for your career. Please, regurgitate his notes. Trust me. This is a great program. If an old dog like me can learn new tricks then this program can help you. I was admitted into the NSU-KPCOM program before I saw my last GPA. Saleem thinks I will make a good Neurosurgeon. The secret? Be positive, be humble. The program is designed to help you. They know your zone of proximal development. They will extend it. I am a benefactor of that largesse. Come join me on top of the food chain.

  Blake Naar

  Success has no time frame…. It took 6 years, 3 schools, 1 gap year, and many moments where I felt like I didn't belong in college to graduate finally. Unfortunately, I have realized that many of my peers have experienced the same feelings of hopelessness, depression, loneliness, and anxiety. Yet, most struggled in silence or did not have access to sufficient support to assist them in overcoming these hindrances. If you have not known these circumstances, I wish you a continued fortune. But if you have, please let me offer you a few words of advice:

  1. Do not compare yourself to others.Each journey is unique to an individual and may not occur in a "straight line."
  2. Take a step back to move two steps forward. It is only giving up and failing if you do not learn anything.
  3. Reach out for support. If you have trouble communicating what you're feeling or do not have an opportunity to gather support, express yourself through creativity or reach out to someone, anyone.
  4. Practice self-care through self-validation. Being mindful of your emotions and acknowledging them may yield the control you need right now.
  5. Prioritize yourself AND practice empathy, respect, and kindness. Many people come into your life, and the situation may not work out. But always be thankful for the good they may have offered.
  6. Take it day by day and adapt. No explanation is necessary.

  Nova Southeastern University was the door for me that would lead to new opportunities. There may be a lot of difficult moments, but as a student, it is your prerogative to reach out and ask for help. Never give up on that search. NSU's biology program and its outstanding professors will prepare you for any graduate or life situation that is difficult to adapt to. I am also available to offer an ear or advice on how to get through the hindrances that undergrad life may present.

  NSU's biology program prepared me for success in several ways and provided so many opportunities for me to grow. The biology program offered several extracurricular activities such as research, medical workshops, Science Alive, and pre-medical interview preparation, which had even helped me when applying to medical school and even Internal Medicine residency. Additionally, the advanced classes offered such as Cellular, Molecular Biology, Histology, and Advanced Physiology provided an easy transition to medical school. I will forever be grateful to the faculty members, especially Dr. Schmitt and Dr. Roopnarine, for their constant guidance and support throughout the years. Their passion for teaching and dedication to science is truly inspirational. As I start the next chapter of my life as a medical resident, I will always be appreciative of the experiences, knowledge, and skills I gained from NSU biology.

  My experience as an undergraduate student at Nova Southeastern University has been both an enriching and fulfilling experience. I got my bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Public Health and am proud to say I will now be continuing my education with NSU to obtain my Masters's in Anesthesia. The biology program at NSU has provided me with all the tools and skills needed to complete this rigorous master's degree and I am so grateful for that. The professors at Nova really helped make this experience as pleasant as it was, and their never-ending support and guidance are very much appreciated.

  Attending NSU was an incredibly enriching experience that I look back upon fondly. As my future goal is to attend medical school, the Biology program encouraged my pursuit of greater knowledge in ways I wouldn't have thought possible. Throughout the majority of my college career I volunteered with Science Alive, headed by Dr. Schmitt. Teaching science concepts to children in ways they could understand was so fulfilling, and it eventually led to a semester internship. With the guidance of Dr. Schmitt, our team got approved for a SIgma Xi grant regarding a hydroculture project for the kids! This is just one way that the NSU Biology program expanded my love and appreciation for science.

  I am currently serving for the National Health Corps in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! As I work for the Center of Adolescent Medicine at UPMC, I have the privilege to work with children and teenagers about different aspects of their health. My goal is to learn more about health inequities and the various determinants of health throughout my service year. One can learn about barriers in a classroom, but the realities many face with access to care go beyond that. Having the privilege to work with local leaders and organizations are at the forefront of my mind, and I want to make sure that the choices I make assist in their goals for the future. The influence of professors (that I still contact to this day!) like Dr. Schmitt, Dr. Doan, and Dr. Tartar have changed my perception of how to go about my service term. I have the luxury of combining both my Biology and Public Health education early on in my professional life, which will thus prepare me even better for medical school! NSU will always have a place in my heart, and I hope that current students can share their stories in the future. Go Sharks!

  As I sit here and remember NSU, it always brings a smile to my face. The memories of brilliant lectures and funny conversations alongside the happy faces that comprise NSU flood my mind. NSU prepared me for a path that has helped me realize my goals and aspirations in becoming a Doctor. Although NSU was a great environment that nurtured by love for medicine, it can not be said enough that Dr.Schmitt and her colleagues inspired us to look at the world with a willingness to help. Without their zeal for the field of biology, I feel that I would have been lacking direction. Dr.Schmitt has allowed me to feel confident about my self and the future while providing me with the instruments to succeed. Additionally, Dr. Schmitt and Science Alive has helped me to feel excited for my first year of medical school at KCUCOM-Joplin. As I start the next year, I look back and remind myself of a phrase my family likes to say, "Just keep swimming" and I hope you say the same to yourselves.

  Attending NSU was one of the best decisions I made. The biology program gave me many hands on experiences and learning opportunities that helped prepare me for field work and research. The amazing professors and intimate program allowed me to hone in on my specific interests and tailor my degree to set me up for success.   Where does one even start? Through my 4 year rigorous and clinically-centered Pre-Medical undergraduate study at Nova Southeastern University- I was well prepared for my current career in Public Health and Health Care Administration; in addition to my Master's program in Biomedical Science (Graduate 2010). Furthermore, I was highly prepared after taking my MCAT and scoring well enough for full admission into Ross University's School of Medicine in 2011. Through hands-on laboratory training, mock clinical sessions and much more; in addition to being a member of the inaugural Clinical Explorations Program (mentored by my first professor Dr. Robin Sherman)- I was well-prepared for the clinical duty and hospitalist detailing/health education and epidemiological/medical outreach and research which I currently manage on a day to day basis. The professors I had were all truly remarkable and had helped steer my scientific mind and shape it into a professional scientific one as it stands today. For this and more, I will always be eternally grateful. This training also helped me pay it forward as a teacher for over a decade for K-University Microbiology at Barry University as a brief stint as an Adjunct Professor. A big thank you to Dr. E.   Pedro Manuel Belaunzaran

  My name is Pedro Manuel Belaunzaran, and I graduated with an MS in Biological Sciences Health Studies Concentration from Nova Southeastern University. This program helped me achieve my life-long endeavor of earning admissions to NYU College of Dentistry. Moreover, most of the courses shaped my critical thinking skills to start thinking like doctors, especially in Pathophysiology. I feel more prepared for the upcoming classes that I will begin this summer in dental school. The courses that I will be taking as a D1 student are more or less the same as what I took during this program. Pathophysiology, Pharmacodynamics, and Advanced Regional Anatomy & Lab were my favorite courses during the program. Dr. Deanne Roopnarine helped advise on my application, especially with the personal statement, and she met with me frequently to make sure that I was progressing towards my goal. The best advice that I can provide anyone who would want to attend this program is to follow the timeline that Dr. Deanne Roopnarine sets forth to have a better chance of becoming admitted into dental school during your last term of the program. Please note that this program will mold you into becoming a more competitive applicant to dental school for those of you who are pursuing dentistry. This program will push you to become more prepared for starting your first semester in dental school with 25 credits of rigorous courses.

  NSU really helped prepare me for my current job. I ended up not using my BS degree from NSU to go onto medical school, but instead decided to attend a school closer to home and become a nurse (because I had my daughter and wanted more time with her and my husband than I would have had if I went onto medical school). I was over prepared for nursing school after NSU. Nursing school was a piece of cake in comparison to the Biology program at NSU. I gained a lot of knowledge and skills from the biology program. It is a fabulous school with amazing teachers. Words of wisdom: pick the teachers that will challenge you - don't pick the easy teachers for your core classes: I suggest Dr. Roopnarine and Dr. Schmitt. Picking teachers that challenge you to do your best will be much better for you in the long run!

  Transitioning from living in Michigan to moving to Florida to attend NSU, I honestly didn't know what to expect. All I knew was that I had this one important goal of helping people as a physician. Within no time, I knew that attending NSU would provide me with all the resources and skills I would need to become the best possible student and future physician. More importantly, I was able to surround myself with mentors such as Dr. Schmitt, Dr. Smith, Dr. Doan, and so many other professors who always encouraged us to immerse ourselves in all the wonderful opportunities that our school and the student body was able to provide us with (e.g. research opportunities, volunteering, shadowing opportunities, and even on-campus jobs). Today I am able to confidently say that without NSU, I don't think I would've been able to become half the person I am today and gotten into the medical school of my dreams. I'm so thankful for all the lessons, the experiences, and the wonderful people I was able to meet at NSU. These are memories I will cherish forever as I embark on my journey of helping those in need.

  I joined the Biological Sciences program after the recommendation of Dr. Lopez who has also been my Thesis supervisor during my Master's. The program prepared me with all the tools necessary to find a job at a biotech company based in San Diego, CA. With the combination of skills learned in class such as bioinformatics, statistics, genomics, biology, etc. and the leadership of Dr. Lopez who has taught me all the wet lab techniques I am using to this day in my current job, I would say that the Biological Sciences program at NSU is a force to be reckoned with.

  I am so very thankful for everything the Masters in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Health Studies program has done for me. I entered undergrad at NSU knowing for certain I wanted to pursue a career in dentistry. I knew that after undergrad I wanted to find a program that would improve my application and prepare me for the challenges I knew I would face in professional school. Having since completed the program and now being enrolled in NSU’s College of Dental Medicine I can truly say that the courses and faculty in the program provided me with the material and guidance to really excel in dental school. The faculty design the curriculum in the program to mirror that of what you will experience in professional school. I began dental school having already learned so much material I was able to apply to my new classes. Additionally, the faculty are incredibly helpful both in and outside of the classroom. I found myself going to speak with faculty members not only for help on exam topics, but also for help in my next steps after finishing the program and transitioning into dental school. Words cannot describe how thankful I am that I was fortunate enough to experience the Masters of Biological Sciences program. It was not only a crucial help in my acceptance into dental school, but also a crucial help in giving me the edge I needed to succeed in dental school.

  Hi! My name is Melanie Fraidenburg and I completed my undergraduate training in NSU's biology program. Looking back at my undergrad experience, I'm very grateful to have had great mentors and professors who had a real passion for science! This was displayed in their teaching and mentoring styles and in their enthusiasm towards their own research areas/projects. This has inspired me to continue my academic and professional career in the sciences! I'm also grateful to have been in a supportive and collaborative environment made up of faculty and fellow students which also enriched my learning experience at NSU. I liked the small classes at NSU because I got to know my peers and professors, and I learned individually and as a team member.   Avidor Gerstenfeld

  Even before becoming a student at NSU, I had the opportunity to experience the warmth of the faculty of Nova’s Biology department. Much of my - and many of my fellow students’ - positive experiences during our time at Halmos College of Natural Science and Oceanography can be directly attributed to Dr. Schmitt’s passion for what she does and how she truly cares for each individual student. This experience was a large reason for my initial interest in NSU and has been a consistent and transcending tone of Dr. Schmitt’s department.

  While earning my BS in Biology (2018), I built not only academic skills and knowledge, but also presentation skills, leadership, and soft skills. Together, my classmates and I worked on gut microbial research and formed the Student Research Society, which later became the foundation for NSU’s Sigma Xi chapter. This could not have happened without Dr. Schmitt and Dr. Fortino. I was exposed to new opportunities, while at the same time encouraged to dive deep into exploring my passions. Today, I am a medical student at NSU’s KPCOM, working on a CPR nonprofit startup, and still actively engage in community EMS.

While applying to medical school, obtaining a master's through this program has identified areas I needed to improve on and I was able to gain key information that would ensure my success during my first year in medical school. I wish I was more involved in extracurricular activities and research, so I recommend doing that, as Nova has plenty to offer! I enjoyed being able to work out on campus to help destress.   My name is Mayte Lezcano and I am a first year pharmacy student in the Pharm. D. program at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Fort Lauderdale campus. I formerly attended NSU as an undergraduate dual admissions student, where I acquired a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. During my time at NSU, I also had the opportunity to play collegiate softball. It is without a doubt that NSU has provided me with a phenomenal foundation to build off of for my future professional endeavors as a pharmacist. It is where my competitive nature and dedication stems from and why I feel comfortable networking in the professional world today. Within the biology program, I found it incredibly important to attend live lectures and establish a relationship with your preceptors in order to succeed. In the end, I feel as NSU presented many opportunities for me to step out of my comfort zone and broaden my scope of experience, knowledge, and leadership.

  My success following NSU is the result of two factors—course design and faculty. The coursework at NSU was both broad and deep. The labs associated with the courses were challenging in a meaningful way. I entered my doctoral program more prepared than many of my peers. The faculty I interacted with were outstanding. The small classroom sizes ensured I could form relationships with my professors, which was a large source of inspiration for attending grad school.

  NSU has prepared me to take over one of NSU University School's most prestigious classes, Microbiology AT. The experiential learning experiences offered by NSU through internships, labs, and organizations are not only plentiful, but they also prepare you to have a competitive edge. The lessons I learned as an undergrad such as the Tiny Earth Program - a project focused on discovering antibiotics through student-sourced soil, served as my entry point for U-School. Additionally, established organizations like HOSA: Future Health Professionals at NSU also drove me to become a HOSA advisor for U-School, further expanding the experiential learning experiences like science-based competitions.   My name is Elizaveta Shmakova. All my life I loved biology, but didn't know what exactly I wanted to do with it. The biology program at NSU gave me the tools I needed for my career and most importantly showed me a range of possibilities how I can apply biology to my career. The program shows students many aspects of biology. During classes students not only learn crucial information about the subject, but also apply this knowledge by solving real life issues in the classroom. The small class sizes allow for personal relationships with your professors. What actually helped me many times, when I needed their help after my graduation or during my research. Everyone was willing to help and very supportive.

  During my MS program I was able to find a job in the field. It helped me to learn faster and get experience working in a microbiology/genomics lab. Right now I am working on my own biotech start-up, where I use the same techniques I have learned at NSU.

  Whitney E. Van Arsdale

  7 years after graduating from NSU (fins up!) I can fully and confidently say my favorite aspect of my time at NSU was the unwavering support from my professors. At NSU, you are not just one of 500 students in an auditorium and that matters for your development as a person and a professional. I am still connected with several of my professors, who I can reach out to from time to time to help provide advice and guidance as I am developing into a working professional (or to just brag about myself a little!). Very few undergraduate students at other universities can say they had less than 30 students in a freshmen biology class, and several upper level classes with less than 5 students. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from your professors, not just academically speaking, they have so much wisdom in their words and they are always eager to support us.

  I was a student in the Dual Admission Physician Assistant program, and am currently enrolled in NSU's Fort Lauderdale PA program. The course work as a biology major prepared me for the first semester courses of PA school. My involvement in NSU's only pre-health co-ed fraternity, Delta Epsilon Mu (DEM), prepared me with experiences necessary for growth and applying to PA school. I had exposure to many different healthcare fields/professionals, community service events and leadership opportunities as an executive board member of two years. I also enjoyed my time participating in cognitive psychology research, where I was a part of many studies, poster presentations and have had the opportunity to be published.

  Kayla-Ann Wilkes

  Hi, my name is Kayla-Ann Wilkes and I’m a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student at NSU, Ft. Lauderdale campus. I am in my third and final year of the program; I graduate in May 2021! During my time in the DPT program I’ve gained experience with research and participated in multiple volunteer opportunities including an international medical mission trip. I attended NSU for 4 years during undergrad where I majored in biology and minored in exercise and sports science; I was also part of NSU’s dual admission for the DPT program. I’ve excelled in my program thus far which I contribute to my undergraduate biology studies which prepared me for graduate level courses. I found the biology and exercise science curriculum to be rigorous while accomplishing its objective. During my time in undergrad I learned how to efficiently study, and time manage with support from my professors, peers, friends, and mentors all of whom I was able to form close relationships with due to the small class sizes. NSU also provided me with numerous opportunities for participation and to develop my leadership skills within my organizations. My advice to current undergraduate students is to take advantage of the opportunities NSU has to offer, get out of your comfort zone, broaden your perspectives, and be proud of all you’ve accomplished!

  NSU was a great place for me to learn everything and anything about History. I had wonderful professors that prepared me for my current position as a Social Studies Teacher. I learned more at NSU than at any other school/college/university that I had attended prior. The professors at NSU were very supportive and knowledgeable in history, which allowed me to become more intelligent in the subject. I was able to take a lot of notes, by hand and computer (depending on the class), and I still have those notes to this day. Everything that I wrote down helped me learn and become more intelligent in history. If it was not for NSU I would definitely not have learned as much in history as I would have wanted to. NSU prepared me for my future.

  My name is Emeline Calligaris, I was born in France, I am an NSU alumna and International Student. I moved to the States in August 2011 to pursue my dream career that is Dentistry. I completed my Bachelor's in Biology in 2015 and got my Doctorate in Dental Medicine in 2019, both at Nova Southeastern University. NSU has always been my home away from home and I am so grateful for all the opportunities and people I met during my journey.   As a transitioning veteran from Iraq and Afghanistan, I started my first day at NSU only a few weeks after getting back from my final tour. I was pleasantly surprised at how close the department was and the resources available to me to ensure my success. I developed great relationships with my professors and still keep in touch with them today. Throughout my time at NSU, I was well mentored and coached by faculty, staff and alumni. I had a job as a scientist ready for me only two weeks after I graduated. Without the guidance I received at NSU, my future would have been unclear. I also met my wife on the NSU main campus, we now live in Colorado and have two children.

  The greatest takeaway from the Biology program at NOVA would most certainty have to be the quality of my education. I'm currently working at a fast-growing biotech in the Bay area and I still apply (and teach) the same techniques and practices I originally learned in the lab at NOVA. Additionally, I truly felt as if the program was tailored to my needs. Professors are readily accessible and the smaller class sizes made me feel as if I was "home" away from home. My peers as well as my teachers cared for my work, my grades, and even my attendance. There is no doubt in my mind that without them, I would not be where I am today. And we all met at NOVA.

  My honest and best advise for all students attending is to try and develop healthy relationships at school with peers and teachers for they can last forever.

  As a graduate of NSU class of 2019 I take this time to reflect on my years at this amazing university that I have come to see as my second home. NSU has provided me with a large number of course that has prepared me for my future career in the medical field. NSU staff and faculty had given me great resources and that extra edge needed to prepare me for life after graduation. From their pre- medical clubs and their great internships, I have grown and experience a lot from my first day of walking on NSU grounds. My words of wisdom to current students are to take advantage of what NSU has to offer and take some time to look at where you are and how far you have come from.

  Alma Alfarra

  As a freshman in undergraduate school, I knew I wanted a career option that was biology-based and provided ample opportunities for empathetic human connection. Through researching various healthcare professions and shadowing, I developed a deep interest in dentistry. However, I knew my courses in professional school were only going to become more challenging than the courses I took in undergraduate school. To bridge the chasm, I decided to apply for the Masters of Biological Sciences program. This program has not only strengthened my science background, but also allowed me to discover and experiment with efficient styles of studying. Furthermore, the healthcare field is highly competitive. Acquiring a master’s degree has strengthened my dental school application, provided me with several interview invitations, and an acceptance to Touro College of Dental Medicine in New York. All-in-all, I am extremely excited to continue down my path to dentistry and I believe that the Master’s of Biological Sciences program has helped me achieve my goals.

  NSU's biology program is an important factor in maintaining the foundation necessary for attending a graduate program. The intimate class size gave ample interactions with enthusiastic and helpful professors. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have had the privilege of being lectured by stellar faculty such as Dr. Schmitt, Dr. Smith, Dr. Raja, Dr. Eldakar, as well as Dr. Lash. Alongside Dr. Schmitt, I also had the pleasure of doing a protein modeling research on the prion that causes Gerstmann–Sträussler–Scheinker syndrome, and participate in an afterschool program called Science Alive that introduces STEM topics to elementary students. You cannot go wrong with NSU's biology program because all the connections and tools are there to further your education and get you involved in research and give back to the community.

  The undergraduate biology program here at NSU did an exceptional job at preparing us students for graduate level studies. It was only until I started medical school and saw students from many other universities struggling with courses, like biochemistry and anatomy, that I truly realized this. Many of the courses that are offered here help to develop a strong foundation in the basic sciences, with various high yield and practical topics being the focus of the course. The best and most unique part about this program is how genuine, caring, and receptive the faculty is of their students. They truly care to help maximize our education and are always willing to meet with students one on one. Just as a friendly note to anyone who may be starting or is already in the program, try to get involved and immerse yourself as much as possible, you will truly see the fruits of your hard work. Overall, I am thankful for the knowledge and experiences I gained through the biology program at NSU and would not trade it for any other.

  I graduated in May 2019 with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and a minor in Health Sciences Psychology. I will be attending Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy as a Pharm D. candidate of the class of 2023. NSU helped me prepare for the doctorate of pharmacy by providing me with opportunities such as being able to do pharmaceutical research with the pharmacy school whilst still being an undergraduate. I am extremely fortunate for that experience as I was one of the select few (6 students) and I know it definitely prepared me and gave me a taste for what was to come during pharmacy school. I was also able to be involved in various clubs and organizations that helped me network and meet other like-minded individuals on campus. Many of my professors were very supportive of my endeavors and provided advice, encouragement and mentor-ship.

  If I had one piece of advise for students, it would be this: keep going. You will struggle, you will face long hours in the classroom and even longer hours on your own time in the books. Anything worth having doesn't come easy, and your journey throughout undergrad will be plagued with setbacks and tribulations but as cliche as it sounds there's always light at the end of the tunnel, and no matter what the sun will rise the next day. Luckily for you, NSU has curated a culture of friendly staff, attentive and helpful professors and top-of-the line scholarly resources and equipment to utilize that will mold you into a successful student. One last point to make is that networking is extremely important; talk to your classmates, professors and even professors for other classes - you'll never know what that conversation will result in. I was able to do graduate level pharmaceutical research just by one day casually talking with an LA (lab assistant) in one of my science labs. Work hard, have fun and take advantage of it all.

  The biology program at NSU gave me the tools I needed for future success through the unrivaled passion of the professors and the ability to experience what I was learning about firsthand through field and lab work. The small class sizes allow for personal relationships with your professors and peers, and act as the necessary foundation for future inspiration and proclivity towards a given field. The best thing I did at NSU was to take classes that scared me, or in subjects that I didn't know much about. In those classes, you learn the most about your interests and gain a broader perspective on the synergistic world we live in.

  Carina Grand

  For as long as I can remember I have had a love for optometry. Growing up with my grandparents, who are both practicing optometrists, provided me with the exposure and experience to realize that optometry was the profession I wanted to pursue. During my senior year at NSU I knew that I wanted to strengthen my application and academic background to make the transition into optometry school a successful one. I applied to the Masters in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Health Studies program, and it has exposed me to courses such as neuroscience, immunobiology, and pathophysiology- which I never had the chance to take during my time as an undergraduate. By expanding my knowledge in courses I will have to take again- such as anatomy- and exposing me to the deeper level of understanding required in graduate school, this program has built my confidence heading into optometry school. During this program I decided to apply to optometry school and have received an acceptance to Midwestern University Chicago College of Optometry. I am thankful that the master’s degree in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Health Studies has given me an edge and confidence in accomplishing my goal of becoming an optometrist.

  The most amazing thing is how personal the professors get with their students. Class sizes are so small that students actually get personalized learning because the professors know you so well. There are also a plethora of classes that are available above the basic sciences that go deep into the nitty-gritty of each professor's specialty.

  I sound like a commercial but this is true. To make up for it, I will say a "bad" thing about NSU. The class sizes are so small that professors can call on you by name to ask you questions and will also know if you are absent for a class. I suppose this could be seen as a good thing depending on how you look at it. I'm not very good at this apparently.

  Aarabhi Rajagopal

  Coming into NSU, I didn't know what to expect because it was my first time in Florida and my first time away from home in Minnesota. However, I soon found a place that was as unique and enriched as I was hoping college would be! Within NSU Biology, Spanish, and Honors program, I found a home that I still fondly remember to this day.

  Through my time in these programs, I learned all the aspects I'd need for my future career in medicine, pediatrics, and time in Miami and Chicago. The courses offered to me through the Biology department served me well for the rigors of the pre-clinical years in medical school, giving me a taste of what would come in the subsequent 4 years. Taking Honors courses opened my eyes to so many aspects of the world, and allowed me to become a more well-rounded human being. Taking Spanish as a minor and becoming more fluent (and well versed in medical vocabulary) proved to be invaluable throughout my 4 years in medical school, as it allowed me to cross language barriers with our Hispanic patients and provide better care as a medical student.

  However, my absolute favorite part of being at NSU relationships I developed with my professors because of the increased amount of interaction and small class sizes. Their constant encouragement, advice, and undying support carried me through my time there as an undergrad and gave me the motivation (in part) to succeed beyond my wildest dreams. The professors want the best for their students, which was very apparent from my first day at NSU. Fostering these relationships with my professors allowed me to obtain amazing research & internship experiences, as well as fantastic letters of support that allowed me to continue my studies in medical school at UMMSM. Most importantly, however, I gained mentors for life that I truly look up to and admire, and I keep in touch with many of them to this day. One day -- I hope to be as influential as they have been for me!

  One last piece of advice -- pursue whatever passions make you happy, and hold onto them. And stay true to yourself (above all). There are few things in this world that truly make life worthwhile, but your passion for the endeavors you experience is definitely one of those things. Do what fills you with joy because even then, the sacrifices and everything in between will be so worth it.

  Lauren N. Alfino

  I graduated in May 2018 with a degree in marine biology and biology, a minor in marine ecology and as the first person in the Honors in Major- marine biology program. I am currently attending Colorado State University as a DVM candidate of the class of 2022. NSU helped prepare me for the doctorate of veterinary medicine by providing me with opportunities such as completing the Honors in Major program where I did research on how growth layer groups in pinniped teeth can provide important information and show changes in time in the environment and in the animal. Many of the professors were very supportive of my endeavors and provided sound advice and encouragement. My advisor for the Honors in Major program, Dr. Hirons, gave me unconditional support and always helped me when I had questions or was struggling.

  If I had one piece of advise for students, it would be this: If you never ask, the answer will always be no. Every time I didn't ask a question when I was confused in class, I lost the opportunity to learn and grow. It was only because I asked for more experiences that I learned so much more than the curriculum can offer. If you want to do research (which I swore I would never do my freshman year) or not, still see if there is a project a professor wants done, if a grad student needs help on their thesis or approach a professor with you own ideas. There is only so much you can learn in a classroom but its the experiences in a lab, in the field, in an internship/shadowing program that provide you with the knowledge to confirm what you do or do not want to do with you life.

  NSU provided me with amazing opportunities to grow as a student and future physician. The Biology program had professors who challenged me in positive ways and a variety of courses to choose from. Professors like Dr. Jaffe and Dr. Loomis provided mentorship along with internship, research, and community service opportunities that prepared me to pursue a career in medicine. When it was time to apply for medical school, it was easy to obtain letters of recommendation from professors who knew me well. The Razor's Edge Leadership Program, Honors Program, President's 64, and extra-curricular activities were also great parts of my experience at NSU. I advise current students to work hard, develop healthy relationships, create healthy habits that promote mental and physical well-being, and have fun!

  The biology program at NSU was an excellent stepping stone on my path to bigger things. I was granted so many opportunities that would otherwise not have been so accessible at larger institutions. My junior year of college I started doing foundational research at an outside lab associated with NSU. I learned the nature of scientific research and acquired skill sets necessary for critical problem solving and reasoning. After I graduated, I realized that I wanted to continue challenging my mind and decided to pursue research full-time. The best thing about NSU is the small class sizes and the ability to really connect with your professors. If it wasn't for them, I would not have learned about the many opportunities that I undertook that got me to where I am now.

  NSU had taught much more than I expected in and outside of the classroom. As I had embarked on my journey to pursue medical school, I enjoyed getting to know my classmates as we continued to challenge each other by taking the same classes and sharing our future goals. I soon realized, after participating in the Science Alive program for the second year, that my goals had changed and that I wanted to become a teacher. The biology program at NSU prepared me for the certification tests and allowed me to become a highly qualified teacher of Biology.   NSU's Biology Program served as a gateway to my career in Osteopathic Medicine and medical profession. It challenged me in various aspects, particularly academically, allowing me to be prepared for rigorous curriculum for medical school ahead. I felt prepared for the first year of medical school. I was also nominated and a recipient of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, which opened many opportunities when applying to medical school and as well residency programs.   There are plenty of research and self study opportunities if you are willing to look for them. Taking upper level science classes that are not necessarily required for your major is one of the most beneficial courses of action that I can recommend to current/future students.   “Where should I begin?” Nova Southeastern University means so much to me and has done so much for me ever since my first day of matriculation. I guess I’ll begin from the top: my name is Eric C. Young and I am a first year medical student of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD program) at Nova Southeastern University. One can imagine how wonderful it feels to be a part of history—to be one of the pioneering class of 2022 NSU MD Charter students. NSU is and has been the place that I call home ever since 2008, where I discovered great mentors and professors like Dr. Emily Schmitt-Lavin, Dr. Mark Jaffe, Dr. Jamie Tartar, Dr. Beatrix Aukszi, and so many more. These professors moved beyond the curriculum and taught values such as hard work, dedication, and integrity. After earning a B.S. in Biology, I took some time off to gain clinical experience. I began working at the city of Miami’s largest public healthcare hospital Jackson Memorial Health Systems. Over a period of a few years, I acquired meaningful clinical experience working closely with patients in Psychiatry and Oncology; my other experiences included working as a phlebotomist and assisting in the hospitals Clinical Pathology laboratory. I also maintained a great sense of humility by volunteering my time and services to organizations like Feeding South Florida, which I had the pleasure of volunteering with Dr. Emily Schmitt-Lavin. While working at the hospital, I also earned a M.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at St. Thomas University, where I became involved in Neuroscience research. With hard work, I earned a 4.0 GPA and I am now proud to return home to Nova Southeastern University to earn my M.D. title. I am most grateful to the many professors and faculty of Nova Southeastern University for nurturing the many positive characteristics that I possess today.

  The biology program at NSU provided me with the foundations to continue with graduate school in the life sciences. What I like the best was the accessibility of the professors. Many of them gave me opportunities to spend summers or entire semesters in their labs learning about the research they did. However, my most valuable experience was meeting outstanding women in science and education that were were important role models to follow. Having someone to look up to is very important, and having the opportunity to see those hard working women having successful careers, beautiful families and prosperous futures was inspiring.   NSU was definitely the best life decision I've made thus far. The small class sizes allowed me to connect with professors in order to thoroughly understand the material as well as expand my professional development. Each new class make connections to previous ones, and the professors made it fun to learn by giving us hands on experiences in laboratories as well as in the field. The travel study programs available were my favorite part of the curriculum, I participated in as many as I could. My plans for the next five years are to continue working at OdySea in order to utilize the funded research to obtain my Masters Degree.

  The rigor of the biology program really gave me somewhat of a “taste” of what medical school would be like a few years down the line. My absolute favorite part of being an undergraduate at NSU was the interaction with professors. Their undying support of my dreams carried me through my years there as an undergraduate, and we’ve managed to stay in touch throughout my graduate program as well. They want the best for their students, and they make that very clear from day one. The small class sizes were a huge advantage in allowing me to foster those relationships with my professors, and that translated to amazing research and internship opportunities, as well as excellent letters of support when it came time to applying to medical programs. I truly look up to my undergraduate professors, probably even more than they know, and I strive to be able to influence the community in the same way that they have influenced me.

  Find your happiness and don’t ever let it go. Your goals in life (both professionally and personally) should align with whatever makes you happy. Whether that happiness is medicine, art, law, education, or basket weaving, I absolutely encourage you to stick to it. Don’t let anyone steer you elsewhere. There were so many people that would say to me “medicine isn’t what it used to be, I don’t understand why anyone would want to get into the field in this era.” I respectfully agree to disagree with this notion. Although medical school has been the biggest sacrifice of my life, I can still say without a shadow of a doubt that I was made to do this, and I am tremendously happy and grateful to be here.

  Someone once told me “greatness is a lot of small things done well, day after day”. I couldn’t agree more. Working hard for a day, a week, or perhaps even a year may not get you exactly where you projected you’d be in that time frame. But stay true to yourself and always have faith in your ability.

  During my first semester of medical school, I faced significant academic challenges. There was a tremendous learning curve and I had to quickly adjust to the overwhelming amount of information to memorize. The most important recommendation I have for students is to challenge themselves with difficult courses and professors who have high expectations. The resources at NSU are all there, but it is up to you to take advantage! The small classroom setting provides a great opportunity for legitimate teacher-student relationships that can lead to things such as research projects, conference presentations, and academic internships that help differentiate you from the rest of the applicants. They are your ultimate resources, and there is no doubt in my mind that without them, I would not be where I am today.

  As a current medical student, I can confidently say that NSU's biology program definitely aided in my preparation for medical school's rigorous curriculum. The biology and chemistry courses are definitely the building blocks for any higher level science classes, really try to take advantage and learn as much as you can from these "basic" classes (it makes learning advanced material easier)! I also took higher level biology courses, such as genetics, microbiology, as immunology. I cannot express how much seeing this material before entering medical school eased my transition. Both the material and the rigor of these courses closely match what I've been learning in my courses!

  NSU is such a unique school because of all of the different opportunities available for students, which I enjoyed the most. I was able to create and start my own genetics research project with Dr. Schmitt Lavin, help publish an anthropological research paper with Dr. Smith-Cavros, and work part time as a peer tutor. The four years I spent at NSU were hands-down some of the best four years of my life! Take advantage of all of the resources NSU has to offer; they may not be advertised very publicly, so definitely do some research and there are always the amazingly helpful faculty that would love to assist you!

  The biology program at NSU gave me the opportunity to pursue an original research project both through the college and through a TriBeta (National Biology Honor Society) research grant. I found this to be extremely unique particularly because most of my colleagues had only been able to participate in research where the lead author was a Ph.D. Another wonderful quality that the program provided was the ability for me to get to know my professors on a one-on-one basis. As an alumni, I still keep in touch with some of them!

  The biology program at NSU strengthened my knowledge of core sciences while also providing a solid foundation in upper level science courses such as biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology. I’m most grateful for the lasting rapport I built with other NSU alumni, students, and faculty. As noted from the brief synapses regarding my continued education, it’s been a long road with more obstacles to overcome ahead. There is no date range listed on your degree, therefore, don’t allow time to define you. In the end, this journey is your own. Don’t undermine the challenges you faced not only as a student but a mother, caretaker, full/part-time employee, or whatever the reality of your situation. The road you chose maybe one less frequently traveled but in the end, we all share a common denominator. As students, we’re pursuing higher education with a goal in mind. Remain steadfast in your pursuit and continue pushing forward.

  Well I'm not currently working in an area of my degree but having a degree in biology definitely makes it easy to apply to healthcare related fields and higher education and if I decide to go the nursing route I can do a fast track program to get my bachelor's in nursing. And then skip masters and go straight to a doctorate.

  At Nova what I liked the best was definitely the faculty and the other students. Why? Making relationships allowed me to feel connected and like I was part of something bigger - that I belonged which is what so many people want and look for.

  Words of wisdom: Get involved on campus - there are a lot of clubs. And don't pick one just for your resume but pick one you actually enjoy going to and with people you'd enjoy being around - a group that is more of a community than anything else. Getting connected with others and forming relationships will make you happier and help you to enjoy college way more than anything else. Please don't just go to class and go home - make friends. Also it's totally possible to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night - just make it a priority. I always made sure I got sleep and I still had time for work, church, clubs, my husband, and I kept up my grades. Just don't procrastinate studying and you won't need to pull all nighters.

  The Nova Southeastern University program helped me develop biological knowledge and understanding of living processes for a number of different purposes, including treatment of disease and living organism. My favorite part of the program was the medical and life sciences, covering areas such as health and disease, neurology, genomics, microbiology and pharmacology. Nova offered a variety of research and shadowing opportunities that helped me decide the future of my career. In addition to wonderful guidance through academics, Nova always had fun events and volunteer opportunities that made my undergraduate an excellent experience. Word of advice, make connections and make yourself known within staff and students. What makes a great Biology student is not only a great GPA but also how much are you available for your community and your school.

  My name is Nicholas Carris and I am pharmacist and assistant professor at the University of South Florida. I formerly attended NSU as an undergraduate dual admissions student, where I acquired a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. During my time at NSU, I also had the opportunity to play collegiate baseball. NSU provided me a world class foundation to launch me into pharmacy school and beyond. The small class sizes helped me establish relationships with professors and peers. What’s amazing is being able to look at all the impressive accomplishments that my old study groups have racked up. I’m thankful for my time at NSU which has enabled me to have a career I love, to work with students, to teach pharmacy, to advocate for patients, to build a better health care system, to publish my own original research, and to work with the National Academies to address the opioid overdose crisis.

  The biology program provided a foundation to prepare me for medical school. What I liked best about NSU were the teachers that provided excellent education during my time at NSU. They were attentive and helpful when you did not understood the topic related to the class. The best advice is to understand how to manage your time, to be able to learn to balance studying, responsibilities and leisure. The reason is that as you progress into higher education and later into your career, there will be more responsibilities that will accumulate, and being able to balance work and leisure will enable you to plan better your life and future goals.
