Tintu Chiramel
The biology program at NSU prepared me for the intensity of the course material and volume of the course load at NSUCOM. Initially, I choose to go to Nova because the student to professor ratio was small in comparison to other private universities in florida. I knew that I would learn best in an environment with smaller class sizes. Additionally, all of my professors at NSU had an open door policy which allowed me to ask questions outside of classroom hours. During that time I developed good relationships with my professors and most of them became my mentors and friends. This allowed me to work on my interpersonal skills so that I was able to cultivate similar relationships later on with my professors in medical school and residency training. Healthy professional relationships and networking is vital in any field, especially for success in business and in medicine. I started my career at NSU and am grateful for the education, friendships and mentors I have made along the way.

I chose to attend NSU because I knew that the Biology program would prepare me for applying and completing dental school. While at NSU, I enjoyed the smaller class sizes (as compared to other colleges), therefore I felt that there was more opportunity for one-on-one educational experiences as well as having the chance to get to know most of my professors on a more personal level. I was treated as a person, rather than just a number. My advice to current students would be to take advantage of the community feeling at NSU and to get to know as many professors in order to not only enjoy attending NSU, but to also form life-long relationships with them.

Nova has been one of the most amazing adventures in my life! Four years ago i decided to go back to school to pursue my dream : study biology and as of right now i am doing an internship as part of my masters program in genetics at the CNRS in Bordeaux France researching on alternative splicing of DNA in c. elegans. I think i have learned more during the three years i spent at NSU doing my double bachelor in biology and marine biology than i've ever learned in my entire life! Every professor at Nova my path has crossed was more passionate and dedicated to biology than i've ever seen before and i was so enthusiastic to share my passion with them the entire time i was there. If i can give one advice is to trust in your dreams and don't just sit on them make them come true! Trust me it works!

Perry Dave
I started at NSU after completing high school in the dual admissions program for osteopathic medicine. When starting, I knew things would be tough to get adjusted to, so I made sure the first year that I got good grades and that I maintained my focus. It was not until my second year that I started becoming more involved in extracurriculars now that I could 'handle college.' Through the remaining years, I ran NCAA Men's Cross Country, became and RA, Orientation Leader, joined a fraternity and even served on the BBB e-board, which I started as an associate member. People do not realize the importance of being involved in an organization like BBB as early as possible as an associate member. Anyways, I received a double major in Bio/Psych which added an additional year for schooling. I also took one year off between starting med school and finishing undergrad. If given the choice, take the year off and do things that you would enjoy including self discovery. Nothing can even prepare you for medical school except a good mindset. Medical school was not easy but I got through while doing an addition year as an Pre-doctoral Osteopathic Medicine Fellow which is done between second and third year of school! Currently, I am completing my residency in internal medicine at UPMC as my goal is to become a hospitalist and maybe practice some OMM in an outpatient facility. Words of wisdom that I would give myself is to never give up even if the odds are not in your favor.

Kaitlin Donovan
The biology program at NSU is challenging, yet equally rewarding. I had the opportunity to make lifelong friendships at NSU and get to know many supportive faculty and students, of which I am still friends with today. I was involved in several community service projects throughout South Florida representing NSU. These projects helped me realize the importance of giving back to the community and how gratifying it can be to share my passion of science with elementary students through a program that became very close to my heart "Science Alive!".
As a biology student I was able to create a solid foundation in the field of science, which prepared me for the academic and clinical aspects of dental school. I learned valuable skills, such as: effective studying, how to work under pressure, and the importance of balance.
My words of wisdom for all current students is: do not lose sight of the end goal, whatever it may be. It is easy to obsess over a low test score, never ending lab reports, and endless amounts of studying. However, always remember that even though the path you are on is long, it is extremely rewarding. With hard work, persistence, and determination anything is possible!

While in the undergraduate Marine Biology program I got involved in a lab volunteering to assist graduate students with their research. When doing this I then began my independent study research that I was able to eventually present at the Undergraduate student symposium my Senior year. This time I spent in the lab and field lead me to internship opportunities and also graduate school here at NSU. My advise is to try everything available to you. Dive into research of your own, assist others in theirs by volunteering your time, intern over your breaks or while in classes during free time. It might lead you on a track you never expected, for me it was a masters degree. I couldn't be happier in my program and my lab conducting my own research. Best of luck sharks.

The biology program at NSU gave me incredible and irreplaceable hands-on experience in Marine Biology by allowing me to work closely with graduate students and professors that really cared about my progress. The faculty was brilliant, approachable and curious which made for great mentors and boundless opportunities for undergraduate research. My favorite experiences at NSU included the multiple field trips into unique habitats guided by knowledgeable faculty members (field trips nearly every week in some courses!) that kept the educational experience new and refreshing every week.

The biology program at NSU helped prepare me for my career by giving me a great foundation necessary to help me succeed in dental school. The academic calendar of the first year of dental school is rigorous and the knowledge I gained from my studies in the undergraduate biology program helped me transition smoothly. It made my first year much less difficult and so much more enjoyable.

The lessons were profoundly refreshing and labs introduced me to the whole world of biology. The best parts were the classes. I was introduced to a whole new way of looking at things I had never considered before. Dr. Emily Schmitt is truly a pioneer.

Nova Southeastern University’s Biology Program taught advanced science curriculum that truly challenged and stimulated me. My interest in the courses provided a foundation on which I could build upon as I went further in my studies. I appreciated the professors and classmates that shared the same interests in the biological sciences.
I enjoyed the small classroom setting and the availability of my professors to teach during office hours. They were very personable and devoted their life to academia, often engaging in projects outside the classroom.
My advice is to constantly improve and reflect, keep making adjustments, never give up on your dreams, have close friends and family who have nothing but your best interest in mind, and give back to others.

During my time at NSU, I enjoyed having small classes, which allowed me to have better interactions with professors and peers. The professors really challenged me in every subject matter allowing me to develop better critical thinking skills necessary in my field. NSU has a pool of wonderful resources that will enable you to maximize your full potential as a student. I encourage all students to use them. My words of wisdom would be to stay focus and persevere!

The Biology program of NSU prepared me for my career by providing a rigorous course load that allowed me to fine-tune my studying habits and enhanced my knowledge of the sciences for graduate school. Some of the courses from the Biology program mirrored those of my Master’s program; such as Anatomy, Physiology, Genetics, and Microbiology. The exposure to these courses beforehand allowed me to excel in my Master’s program because I had such a strong foundation science thanks to. I will be attending the College of Dental Medicine here at NSU this upcoming fall of 2017, and I know I will be more than prepared for the challenges of the intense curriculum because I know my undergraduate experiences from NSU prepared me well enough for this program.

The one thing I believe Nova Southeastern University did best for me and my career was employing some of the best and well-educated professors I have ever had the pleasure of being taught by. I studied hard not only because of my dream to become a dentist but because they expected so much from their students and I hate to disappoint. With that being said, to the current students, please use these resources to the BEST of your ability because there is a great advantage to becoming successful in your desired advanced programs.

The NSU Biology and Chemistry teachers are well- equipped in preparing you for professional programs related to medical and dental sciences. Focus on learning each subject well while in undergrad because graduate programs can be very intense with the lack of time to re-teach the basics. Your professors has seen many of their students reach their goals and know what it takes, do not take them for granted.

When I got to pharmacy school and started the curriculum along students from all ranges of undergraduate institutions, it became clear to me just how great and comprehensive the curriculum at NSU is. Without the biology program I would not have been competitive during the medical school application process along with during medical school. My MCAT's scores were both suitable for both MD medical schools along with DO medical schools; in which, the biology program assisted in the preparation.

The NSU undergraduate Biology program definitely prepared me well for the challenges of Dental School. At NSU, I learned valuable time management skills in order to succeed in the more difficult academic years ahead. My favorite thing about NSU was the small classroom size (compared to larger public/private colleges) that allowed a more personal interaction with my professors and more accessibility to them which I believe was another important factor in my success. The most important advice I can give to current students is to get out there and shadow members of whichever career you are considering before pursuing it academically. A lot can change in a career while you are in school working towards it. Another invaluable piece of advice is to MASTER TIME MANAGEMENT NOW! (-aka- don't wait until you actually need it)

I had a wonderful time at NSU. The professors were truly world class and challenged me constantly to take my education to the next level. The class sizes at NSU are small and intimate. This allowed me to develop long lasting relationships with my professors who were always available to answer questions and help the students. In addition, the coursework and research opportunities prepared me very well to attend dental school. My experiences at NSU gave me an excellent foundation for becoming a successful practitioner in my field. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of such great academic institution.

I believe my journey to become a physician started from my first day at nsu as an undergraduate. Biology major here at NSU is not only great but full of opportunities. It prepared me well for medical school. Courses especially like biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, histology were taught well and prepared me for the next level. I met great people who became my lifelong friends, inspiring mentors such as Dr. Emily Schmitt for giving me the opportunity to do research, Ms. Gail Levine, my supervisor at the academic services for pushing me to my limits and Maria Farrell; another inspiring student who inspired me to do research. From fun activities to complex courses, to scholarships, to take honors courses, to research symposium and to chances to attend conventions all over the country, it was all possible to do in short span of four years and how can I forget my wonderful dean Don Rosenblum for approving for these opportunities for his students.

NSU is an amazing undergraduate university, which holds various different opportunities for students seeking extra involvement outside the classroom. This university's biology program prepared me for medical school level curriculum in a way that made the transition from an undergraduate to medical student that much easier. I valued NSU's small class sizes, which allowed for a better learning environment and look forward to seeing NSU continue to excel as a great university.

I definitely felt prepared for the heavy and extremely fast paced PA curriculum from what I learned as a student at NSU. I can excel in areas of the curriculum where many of my peers may struggle. I had excellent Professors in Genetics, Anatomy, and Biochemistry at NSU and that knowledge has provided me an invaluable base in my studies as a PA.

Franklin Saunders Hiffernan
The biology program at NSU offers a wide range of introductory, intermediate, and advanced level courses. It is very beneficial to an aspiring doctor such as myself, and many of you, to take advantage of the diverse curriculum that is available. The harder you work in your undergraduate years, the better prepared you will be for the challenges that lie ahead.
One of my favorite things about NSU was the small class sizes. They gave me many opportunities to get to know my professors and ask the questions that I needed to understand complex theories. Also, the landscaping on campus is just beautiful. Even on a rainy day it’s hard to frown when you look around at the palm trees and flowers that are planted all around. It makes for a great environment to learn and grow.
My words of wisdom for current students would be to look ahead to the future and set goals early on. Being a cancer survivor, I felt my calling to the field of medicine long before I enrolled in college. Maybe your calling will not be derived so plainly as mine, but each of us has a great capacity to expand our minds and to do amazing things for ourselves, and for others. So be kind, be open to new experiences, and work hard.

The biology program at NSU prepared me for the rigorous coursework of optometry school, particularly the first year of it that centered around General Science classes. Classes that I took my final year of undergrad (Microbiology, Biochemistry, Optics, etc.) were included in optometry school and having the classes already presented to me made first year easier to handle.

My undergraduate experience at NSU was crucial to my success at the next the level and beyond. The NSU biology program is unique in that it offers smaller and more intimate class settings. This enabled me to interact more closely with outstanding professors like Dr. Schmitt Lavin, which greatly enhanced my education. Naturally, due to their infectious enthusiasm, I developed a passion for the sciences. This better prepared me for graduate school because of the eagerness to learn and scientific foundation that I cultivated.
One of the things I like best about NSU is the student support system. The professors are very encouraging and genuinely want to see their students succeed. In addition, there are a plethora of educational and professional resources available.
Some advice that I have for current students is to continue to work hard and follow your dreams. Don’t forget to have fun while doing it and be sure to make time for loved ones. Pick a career that fits your personality and do your homework to figure that out. Try to intern or shadow professionals in your prospective field and don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions about the profession.

The undergraduate biology program at NSU gave me the core fundamentals and foundations in a way that even surprised me in my professional work and current graduate studies at FIU. As an example, I draw on my knowledge of the Renin Angitensin System (RAAS) everyday, because of how it was taught to me so well at NSU.The undergraduate biology at NSU also allowed me the flexibility to do courses that were not specifically required for my major of biology, but allowed me to tailor my degree and courses in a way to match my choices for graduate school. Two f these course were, Neurobiology, and Cell & Molecular Biology among others. The course curriculum at NSU also prepared me well for a histotechnology job and its related certification that I immediately acquired after graduating. It also prepared me for a field service Bio-engineering job that had me installing and servicing medical and high-end research instruments before applying to graduate school. Essentially, in the NSU undergraduate biology program, I did not just learn, I also learnt how to learn.

The biology program at NSU definitely helped me realize my potential, while providing an education that is second to none. I didn't realize until I started medical school how much the small class sizes at Nova Southeastern helped me succeed. The intimate learning environment, paired with state of the art technology in the labs, truly gave me an incredible education that helped prepare me for medical school and beyond. The curriculum is rigorous, but there are so many people there to help you along the way. My biggest advice to students would be to get to know your professors and to get involved. There are many opportunities for research here, the key is finding a mentor early. I personally had the opportunity to work with Dr. Collins from the College of Psychology, and presented the findings of my project as a poster at the Psychonomic Society's Annual Meeting in Chicago, Il. It was an incredible experience that challenged me academically, but the process was one that helped me understand my own potential. Whatever your interests are, there is someone at Nova Southeastern that can help you fulfill them.

Jenna Knafo
My Bachelors degree from NSU prepared me tremendously for graduate school. Right after graduating from Nova, I enrolled in a post-bacc bridge program at FIU's HWCOM and although the program is incredibly rigorous, I can attest that my undergraduate education from NSU has been incredibly useful so far and propelled my studies in medicine. Specifically, the higher-level biology courses i took at NSU like histology, advanced physiology, biochemistry, genetics, and cellular and molecular biology have been the most valuable to me thus far as I make my way through the medical program. I am also thankful for NSU's small class sizes and smooth integration between lecture and lab. Many of my current classmates from other universities did not have the same hands-on and integrative lab experiences I had during my time at NSU.
I encourage you to follow your passions and if there's a hobby that you genuinely enjoy outside of medicine, I advise you to try and incorporate it into your daily schedule to break up the rigor. For instance, I took a drawing class my freshman year at NSU as an elective and loved it so much I decided to minor in Studio Arts. With this minor, I was able to create a portfolio of art pieces that incorporated sciences/the medical field. The takeaway message: find a healthy stress reliever and roll with it!
If there's one last piece of advice I can give, it would be to put yourself out there and make connections with your professors. If I hadn't broken out of my shell, i would have never received such valuable advice, been offered numerous positions as a lab assistant for different courses, worked on research projects, volunteered with Science Alive, or had club officer positions. Make use of your professor's office hours and let them help you reach your goals!

Emily Lazowick
The biology program at NSU prepared me for the career I am now building in public health research and practice. While I attended the NSU, I did not have the expectation that I would ultimately end up in the public health field. As an undergrad, I thought I would enter one of the healthcare provider professions, or research in the biomedical sciences. Fortunately, the NSU biology program prepared me for a wide variety of career options, because it solidified the scientific foundations that one needs for any type of career related to health, science, or research. After graduating from NSU, I spent a couple years working in a lab at the National Institutes of Health, and there I realized that I have the greatest interest in epidemiology and improving the public’s health. My undergrad education at NSU prepared me for the Master of Public Health program that I’m now in the middle of completing, as well as my part-time position at a public health research funding organization called Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. My advice to current NSU students is to take advantage of the small classroom sizes and the ability to get to know and work with your professors on research projects that are of interest to you! Also, keep an open mind about where your passions really lie, because the NSU biology program prepares you for so many different career paths.

My success following NSU is the result of two factors—course design and faculty. The coursework at NSU was both broad and deep. The labs associated with the courses were challenging in a meaningful way. I entered my doctoral program more prepared than many of my peers. The faculty I interacted with were outstanding. The small classroom sizes ensured I could form relationships with my professors, which was a large source of inspiration for attending grad school.

NSU's biology program is very well rounded with many talented professors, not just in biology but in all sciences. My advice to any current student is to take full advantage of your teachers, ask them lots of questions and pick their brains because they are very good at what they do (I wish I had done it when I was there). Whether you want to pursue further academic degrees in science and medicine, or just stick to biology, you will be surprised of how well prepared you will be, but it is up to you to learn as much as you can from your professors. Their job is to answer your questions, and not to ask them for you

1. How the bio program prepared me: I think NSU is amazing. It provides you with all the resources required to succeed, and has some gems larger and smaller programs do not have. There is unlimited tutoring in whatever subject you want, research is not difficult to find, it's possible to even do clinical research with the grad school professors (!!!), you can find amazing activities or make them yourself, there is a club for whatever interest you have (or again you can make it!), and there are some truly great professors who can explain complex topics that you could have spent a week trying to learn, that they can TEACH in a 1 hour class :) 2. Best things about NSU and my time: Wonderful mentors! and I met my best friend at NSU 3.Words of Wisdom (?) This is a time to learn and grow. You will grow so much in your confidence, knowledge, and learn to grow your compassion more than you thought possible. You will meet amazing friends, and mentors who will inspire you to be the very best of yourself. You will also have days of loneliness, frustrations, self doubt, and feel like there is nothing good about you. Realize those moments will happen (sometimes a lot), but it's something every adult will feel no matter where they are in life. Choose to focus on all the truly beautiful pieces of yourself, and realize you carry more than enough in yourself to achieve all the dreams you daydream of accomplishing. Just start.

Some of my most challenging classes were from the biology department at Nova, but they were the most rewarding. My time there laid the foundation for where I am in my professional career today. I liked the small class sizes which meant I had the attention of the professors and not just TAs. Being close to the beach didn't hurt either. Words of wisdom: study a lot, but don't pull all nighter's. You will be successful without them. Remember to have a balanced social life.

I enjoyed the NSU small faculty to student ratio which allowed a high quality and more personalized educational experience. I developed great relationships with many NSU faculty. The lessons they taught me continue to drive and influence my thoughts and actions today. The most important skill in the health care profession is compassion and kindness which Dr. Schmitt exemplified in her outreach to Science Alive. Today when I see patients, I try to make their experience patient centered. In addition to medically managing them, I try to make them feel more comfortable which builds trust. Ex: Asking them if they need more blankets if they are cold, or if they need a glass of water because their throat is dry, or explaining the reasons behind the medical plan so that they adhere to it. This is not something everyone does, and patients really appreciate it. So biggest message to current NSU Sharks is: treat the patients as if they are your family member- you wont go wrong with the high quality of care you will provide if you have that mindset.

Jennifer Marrero
Having earned a double major in biology and business administration opened ample windows of opportunity. After graduation I worked as a dance choreographer and worked my way up as the Artistic Director. My business degree allowed me the background knowledge to make decisions best for the company and clients. A few years later I transitioned careers and was hired as a science teacher for a charter school. I have had the opportunity to teach various grade levels and science classes. This transition in life could not have been accomplished without my biology degree. NSU provides rigorous learning and application of content along with professors with real-world experience. The small class sizes allowed me to be connected to my colleagues and meet with my professors for one-on-one learning. While furthering my education years after graduating from NSU, I know I will be successful due to the skills acquired during my time there. My words of wisdom for current students attending NSU would include taking advantage of how knowledgeable your professors are; do not hesitate to ask questions. Developing a professional relationship with them can keep the doors open for future opportunities.

NSU's biology major provided a comprehensive fundamental basis of knowledge that could easily be applied across the spectrum of advanced science and health courses. The biology and science professors provided constructive feedback that accentuated my strengths and helped me work on topics and concepts I needed a little more assistance with. The undergraduate biology program helped me develop real world critical thinking skills which were necessary in my medical training and that I still use in my career as a physician. The best advice I can give to current and future students is to always maintain your sense of wonder about the world around you. Graduation is only the beginning of your career as a life long student. You will always be successful if you make learning your end goal.

My degree from NSU prepared me incredibly well for medical school. What I enjoyed the most were the unique classes I was able to take while an undergraduate. I had the opportunity to take histology, immunology, and advanced physiology which were incredibly helpful while in medical school. What was also incredibly helpful were the small class sizes at NSU. While an undergraduate my professors were very involved during lecture, asking questions, having us participate, etc. Many of my classmates in medical school came from much larger universities where the professors were not as involved and they were not as use to being so involved in lecture. I definitely think having that type of connection with my professors in undergraduate and being use to asking questions helped me so much during medical school.

One of my favorite things about NSU is the fact that they encourage hands on learning; The opportunity to attend clinics, work directly with medical professionals, and participate in various projects such as Science Alive really helped me to decide what path I wanted to take. While I was very undecided as to what route to take, the opportunity to shadow students in the dental profession as well as athletic training students gave me a better feel as to what they each entailed. Realizing that I was still somewhat squeamish towards medicine incited fear and panic that I would have no career after receiving my Biology degree. However, the academic faculty put my mind at ease. The faculty at NSU was the best part of the university. Their work in various fields stemming from research to policy showed me that opportunity with a Biology degree is vast! I was given an opportunity to work on an actual research project and participate in the process of submission for a publication. The faculty at NSU really helped me with my professional development and skill set.

Attending the biology program at NSU gave me a great base of knowledge to further my education. The rigorous level taught and high expectations ensured that information was retained for years after learning and it enabled me to have the confidence to continue my education in science and medicine. The labs in anatomy were very helpful in learning about the anatomy of the human body. The only words of wisdom I can offer are to work hard and to continue pushing on until you have reached your goal and are at a career that makes you truly happy.

I was able to immerse myself into doing what I love at Nova by obtaining an internship at the College of Optometry to help me pursue my dream career of an ophthalmologist. I suggest students get involved with clubs, jobs, or internship and volunteer opportunities that help them understand their future careers better. I joined MEDLIFE and went on an international medical service trip and learned a lot about international health care and enjoyed being able to help provide health care to those who were less fortunate. I knew I wanted to become a physician more than ever. I also enjoyed my time in undergrad as I learned more about myself and grew in organizations like MEDLIFE, SGA, NSU Maasti, and Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority.

NSU’s biology program provided me a strong foundation in coursework, lab, and research experience. This prepared me well for a Ph.D. program and was critical to my success. The biology faculty members at NSU are supportive and eager to help in any way they can. For this I am forever greatful! I encourage students to take a wide-variety of courses, as you never know which field may spark your interest!

Completing the Biology program at NSU has helped me achieve my dreams of becoming a Dentist. The biology program helped me learn the fundamentals of biology and anatomy as well as how to study for very complex classes. The study techniques that I learned from professors at NSU as well as from the practice and test taking helped me create a my own study strategies to achieve high exam scores while creating long-term memories of the material. With this practice I was able to take 40 credit hours per semester in dental school and achieve high grades while still retaining the material necessary for my career. The Psychology major prepared me for my career because it helped gain perspective on how people express themselves, how to communicate effectively, and most importantly of all how to listen and understand others. NSU was also a very professional environment that also allowed opportunities to interact and give back to the community through medical/dental organizations. One of the great benefits of NSU is that it allows undergraduate students to tailor their courses to match the needs and requirement of their future career. Therefore, I recommend future students to In conclusion, NSU has been a great educational community from which I've obtained valuable learning experiences that have helped me become the well-rounded individual and future Dentist.

The biology program here at NSU provided me with the basic framework for adapting to the more rigorous classes on the graduate level. Due to the difficulty of the science classes as well as the time management skills required, I was able to transition to dental school without much struggle, unlike many of my peers. For any student planning on furthering their education beyond a bachelor's degree, I highly recommend taking the higher level courses that will be taught in the graduate institution in order to already be acquainted with the subject matter.

The biology program at Nova Southeastern University is a unique program which provides an interactive educational environment directly with the professor in a small class setting. The professors at Southeastern University were very personable and involved in the education of their students. Many of these professors, Such as Dr. Schmitt, Continue to maintain a long lasting mentorship and friendship with their current and former students long after they have moved on in life. We had many resources to aid in our education. For me, lab time was not only a hands on educational experience, it was a brain stimulating exercise that fostered curiosity and challenged me to do more and know more. Mentor-ship from my anatomy teacher, Dr. Roopnarine, planted a seed, which later led me to pursue a career in medicine. When I got to medical school, I felt well prepared for the curriculum. What I enjoyed most about NSU is that it is such a large university with many different programs but each individual class for my degree and minors made me feel as if I were in a small community of biology majors. NSU it's a diverse University, with students from all walks of life, and being located in South Florida, I didn't feel like I was in a college town, instead I felt like part of a bigger city.
Words of wisdom: The harder you prepare in Undergrad, the better you will be prepared for life. Embrace your responsibilities, they only make you a better adult. I chose the biology program at NSU because I love that field of study and I wanted to become a doctor at the time. However, I later decided that a medical career was not for me. But because of the great experience I had in the program, such as the uniquely designed courses, hands-on workshops and the Clinical Experience program, I knew I wanted to stay in this field. I enjoy hands-on work and I loved my anatomy classes, so I decided to pursue massage therapy and became licensed in 2011 - and have loved it ever since! Sometimes your first choice does not work out, and that is ok. Just keep going until you find something that inspires passion and fulfillment within you.

The classes necessary for achieving a biology degree at NSU are comprehensive and in depth. When I was studying for the entrance exam to optometry school (OAT), I did not feel that I was lacking knowledge in the material being tested. However, o nly after I started optometry school did I realize how much of the content covered in the undergraduate anatomy & physiology classes at NSU are at a graduate level. Given the volume of information taught in graduate school, it was extremely helpful that I had already learned about half of the material at NSU. This allowed me a little extra time to focus on material which was new.
What I like best about NSU is the small class sizes. Having at most 40 students in a class allowed direct interactions between the students and professor. Furthermore, whenever we had questions, we could seek help directly from the professors instead of only being able to talk to a teaching assistant. The professors take a genuine interest in students' lives and futures and are always willing and ready to offer any type of assistance we might need. I received not only help, but also encouragement from my professors during school as well as in my application process to optometry school. Till today, I still keep in contact with some of my professors, sharing my experiences in school.
Education is a lifelong journey that should be embarked on with the intention of learning. Once education becomes a drudgery and chore, the focus has been lost. To current students, look at your education as a stepping stone to become the best professional in making a difference to society. You could only have reach this level of education through the help and sacrifice of someone else. Never forget where you came from. Strive hard to be your best for those who will follow behind you!

The biggest highlight of my time at NSU was the wonderful professors I had the privilege of learning from. All of the knowledge they work hard to instill in their students paired with the rigor of the major made it an unforgettable experience. Not only did I learn an immense amount of science, I learned how to better manage time and stress. The support and guidance I received from my professors has made all the difference in my quest to becoming a physician.
Do not lose sight of your bigger picture but recognize that there are many steps to getting there. Work hard and smart at each stepping stone. The biology program at NSU truly prepared me for the rigors of medical school. The curriculum and expertise of the professors challenged me and motivated me to be the best I could be both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities In addition to the academics, the program at NSU also offered numerous opportunities to gain valuable experience in the medical field offering internships at prestigious centers worldwide. Throughout the year there were also many chances to become a leader in the community and volunteer at health fairs, schools, and many other great events. These experiences not only allowed me to grow and gain experience, but it also allowed me to be a more competitive applicant to medical school. As a result of these experiences, as well as the small class sizes, the professors got to know me and I felt confident in asking for letters of recommendation that I knew were all assets to my application for medical school. If I could leave you with some advice, it would be to challenge yourself by applying to every opportunity that comes your way, take the difficult courses, and expose yourself to leadership opportunities. If you don’t apply, you will never know if you would have been accepted and it’s important to take that first step. Hard work pays off in the end.

My time at NSU Halmos College of Natural Science and Oceanography was some of the best of my life. The faculty is excellent and knows how to prepare students for a future in the sciences. From the perspective of a medical student at the end of my 1st year, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that my choices in undergrad have served me well in my career path so far. Taking advantage of honors coursework and advanced biological sciences offered by the college (such as histology and cellular and molecular biology) made the 60+ credits of M1 year entirely more manageable. For future students, I highly recommend taking classes outside of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself. By putting in the extra work now, you’ll be amazed to see how ahead of the game you are when you enter your graduate or professional education or when you enter the workforce.

When I was at NSU I took for granted the benefits of being in a smaller classroom. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to learn in a classroom that fostered personal development, as well as, academic success. Additionally, although I shied away from picking the most challenging professors, somehow I always ended up in their classes. I didn’t know it then but by taking these professors I was building up a backbone that I could rely on when I was in graduate school. Overall, when I look back at my time at NSU I cherish the bonds I made with faculty, as well as classmates, I appreciate the knowledge base I was instilled with, and I’m proud to be a graduate. If you take anything from my few words, please take the time to foster your own knowledge and follow the path that makes sense to you (even if you aren’t quite sure where you want to go).

NSU's biology program prepared me immensely for all of the experience I had after I graduated, but mostly it provided all of the support and guidance to get me to where I am today. The professors who mentored me (Dr. Schmitt, Dr. Loomis, and Dr. Muñoz) played a big role in guiding me accordingly, teaching me, and motivating me to learn more and do more while at Nova. Through science alive I was able to realize how much I enjoyed teaching science, which that in turn played a role in my applying to Teach for America. I actually used one of the experiments as my teaching demo when I interviewed for the program and Dr. Schmitt helped a lot to prepare me for that! Dr. Loomis found an opportunity for me to do research at the pharmacy school and through that I was able to get published and I am very grateful for that! Overall, my success thus far speaks volumes to how great the program is. For future students, my advice is to not give up on your goals. You will have detours, you will have many, many obstacles, but if you truly are passionate about something, it will come, just enjoy your time at Nova and wherever it takes you afterwards!

I have spent my entire adult life at NSU. I moved here after high school when I was accepted in to the dual admission BS/DO program and I can truly say that it is the best decision I have made. At NSU, I matured into an adult and learned lessons in both the classroom as well as outside of the classroom through my extracurricular experiences. I learned the most while taking the higher level advanced courses such as Neurobiology, Microbial Pathogenesis, and Immunology—I highly recommend that anyone pursuing Medicine or a related field take these higher level courses. Building a relationship with a professor is also of the benefits of going to a private school like NSU—take advantage of it! Take the time to get to know your professors—go to office hours, drop a phone call or send an e-mail. It is the people at NSU that make it such a wonderful institution of learning and the reason why I am pursuing my third degree here. Get involved with independent study, even if you do not end up publishing your research it is an amazing learning opportunity. Learn how to write a grant if you have the time. Organizations such as TriBeta, the Biology Honor Society, offer opportunities to do so and there is also a grant locator in the Alvin Sherman Library. Get a leadership position—experiences like this allow you to network and take your undergraduate experience to new heights.

The Biology program as NSU prepared me for my career by giving me the scientific foundation needed in the health field. I also participated in extra-curricular research and this also prepared me to understand the importance of evidence based medicine. What I like best about my time at NSU was the small classroom size and attention given by the professors, all the campus activities and the brand new grand library that was opened at the time that I was there as an undergrad student. During my four years in the biology department at NSU, I felt I received a lot more one on one time with many of my professors. Aside from inside the classroom, they provided me with endless opportunities to apply myself in many other areas. In particular, working with Science Alive was one of the most rewarding things I did during undergrad. It also sparked my interest in working with kids, and it led me to working as a scribe after graduation in a pediatric emergency room. I’m currently a first year PA student, and I can say with confidence I wouldn’t have made it here without the faculty and opportunities I had at NSU. As for tips for current pre-PA students, I highly recommend looking into becoming a lab assistant! During my interview process, I was constantly asked about this experience and how I felt it would benefit my future career. Additionally, don’t be afraid to approach the professors! They have so much information and have guided so many students in your exact position. No matter how big your goals are I guarantee they have resources and suggestions that will help you reach them. Most importantly, enjoy your time at NSU! My closest friends are NSU alumni from the biology department and played a huge role in my success. Dr. Schmitt’s classes were some of the most essential classes into building my understanding of biological principles. These principles are constantly applied in many physiologic principles of medicine and must be known in order to understand pathologic processes. Even something as simple as the sodium potassium pump is essential to understand the function of the cardiac action potential and the related pharmacologic agents. An understanding of the molecular processes taught by Dr. Schmitt is essential to understand the function of the body. So, my recommendation is to pay attention in class as you will need to know this stuff in the future!

Biology is one of the most important subjects to prepare pre-med students. Whether it be continuing education into a graduate program for pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, or anything health related, biology helps understand the basics and to build further knowledge and education based on what was learned in biology. The biology program at NSU better helped me prepare for my career in several ways From helping me learn the best way I study and learn the material to prepare for exams to being challenged on quizzes that were not always multiple choice and sometimes required to write paragraphs explaining the answer. What I liked best at NSU were the smaller class sizes. My professors knew me by my name and helped me one on one to do better in class and learn the material. They were always available to email or step in their office to answer a question or help me understand the material better. For current students, I recommend to stay focused on their goals and make the best out of undergraduate studies because it better prepares you for graduate school. In graduate school, you may not see the same material again; however, prepping for exams and studying different ways helps you find what best works for you and when you start graduate school, you know what study methods work best.

At NSU’s biology program, you really get to know your professors and they get to know you. Deciding to go to medical school presents challenges that other professions do not face. Among a strong GPA and test scores, medical schools look for a well rounded student. At NSU’s biology program, I became involved in many extracurriculars. Most notably, the Science Alive program. Professors and their students brought science experiments and activities to local grade schools in hopes that they will pursue a career in the sciences. These experience reflected well on my medical school applications and I was able to share my experiences during interview days. With the stories gained from Science Alive, I was able to showcase my dedications to teaching, community outreach, and service towards others. These personal attributes set me apart from other applicants! A few words of wisdom: always follow your passions. Don’t let prestige, money, or expectations of others dictate your choices. In many careers (such as in medicine), the sacrifices are great and burnout, depression, and unhappiness is common. Love what you do and all the sacrifices will be worthwhile. Also, it is okay to change your mind and direction. You have a lifetime to define yourself!

Pursing my undergraduate education at NSU was the stepping stone that shaped my career path and personal goals. I started he biology program at NSU at age 16, and it was by far an incredibly challenging, thought provoking and rewarding journey. Besides the superb quality and attention the professors provide in each class, the opportunities this school provides to further gain hands on experience, discover specialties and build a resume is outstanding. My time at NSU was not only academic. I was involved in many organizations, including being president of NSU Honors Student Association, president and former treasurer of Pre-Physician’s Assistant Society, and an active member of Chemistry Club. In addition, I was privileged to be a part of NSU’s honors program, which expanded my horizons and opened doors for experiences I will forever remember. My time at NSU also allowed me to pursue academic research, specifically studying parasitic microorganisms with two undergraduate biology professors and presenting the research at a symposium. The highlight and closure to my NSU experience was being selected as the 2016 Student Commencement Speaker, representing my graduating 2016 Class and giving a speech at graduation. Since graduation, I am currently half way through pursing my master’s in business administration. I look to finish this degree, then move forward with attending medical school where I aspire to become an orthopedic surgeon. The journey to gaining an undergraduate degree in Biology is difficult, but is rewarding in more ways than words can express. My advice is to always use every resource NSU provides, ask for help when needed, stay focused and make sure to prioritize yourself first.

The Biology program at NSU taught me a lot and really prepared me for going to NSU’s Osteopathic Medical School. I was able to participate in an Externship to Graz, Austria where I participated in transplant surgery and research. This helped prepare me for medical school and rotations. While on my rotations I was already prepared to manage patients due to this externship. To current students, my advice would be to work hard but make sure to try experiences that may challenge you. When I first started I was a quiet student but I became a teaching assistant for Anatomy and Physiology Labs with Dr. Roopnarine and was really able to break out of my shell and be more proactive.

The knowledge that I gained as an undergraduate Biology major provided a solid foundation for my future studies. What I most enjoyed and benefited from while I studied at NSU were the small class sizes and individual attention from the professors. Along with my studies, I also played tennis for the NSU women’s tennis team during all 4 years in the undergraduate school. The biology program at NSU was a tremendously helpful preparation for my current studies in optometry school at NSU. All the rigorous coursework and long hours of studying for each science course in undergrad prepared me for the even more demanding schedule of optometry school. All the professors taught me very well most of the same material that I had to learn again during my basic science courses in my current program. That made my studying a little easier because I could focus more on the details this time.
I really appreciated the small class size at NSU during my undergrad. If I had a question or needed help in a subject, I knew I could go to my professor’s office and talk to them. I feel that it made the experience more personalized. NSU also gave me a lot of opportunity to grow personally and professionally. As a peer tutor for 3 years and president of Rotaract for a year, I learned how to communicate as a leader and a team player. Working during my undergrad taught me some very important time management skills, which have become very helpful to me both in my personal life and in optometry school. As I am about to start seeing patients in just over a week, I feel that I am ready to communicate effectively in a professional manner.
For anybody who is just starting the biology program at NSU or is in the middle of it, my best advice is to remember why you are studying so hard. That always helped me when I was in the middle of hectic exam weeks. My dream is finally coming alive, so I promise it is worth it. Take in all the material like a sponge, and don’t try to just pass each class to get your degree. If you are thinking about a career in the medical field of any sort, you want to learn what you need to help your future patients. Not only will that make you a better professional in whatever field you choose, it will help your studying go faster and be more worthwhile.

What I appreciated most about NSU as an undergrad is the sheer volume of graduate programs available to apply for. From law to medicine, many professional careers were offered to students. The students are lucky to also have offered other career programs such as physician assistant or dentistry, among others. Knowing my biology major was tailored for entry into medical school I was secure that my education prepared me for coursework and fulfilled prerequisites in anticipation of medical school commencement
As an undergrad at NSU, I enjoyed most the college experience overall but on a much smaller/personal scale. I got to meet new people, share ideas, and grow up away from home for the first time. NSUs smaller campus size allowed me to do those things in a less overwhelming environment.
Advice I would like to share includes:
Take advantage of all the programs/clubs/groups the campus life has to offer. Carpe diem!
Sign up for a minor (it can open your world, make you more competitive for jobs/graduate school) and usually costs the same tuition as regular full-time coursework.
Don't underestimate the competition. You can never be too prepared.

The biggest highlight of the Biology program at NSU for me is the mentorship given by the professors in the program. All schools have professors, but NSU professors are mentors too. Each faculty member has a small class size that is similar to class sizes in high school so the transition to college is much smoother, and students are able to ask questions freely and interact with their professors. Because students are able to build meaningful relationships with their professors early on, they get to try out scientific research earlier the most Biology students in US colleges. But most importantly, the professors become mentors, and give valuable advice to students for their plans in high education, careers and other future aspirations. My decision to pursue medicine was largely based on the encouragement my mentors from the biology program gave me.
