Abstract

Purpose. Interprofessional education (IPE) stakeholders are looking for guidance in training students with minimal impact on clinicians’ time while maximizing student learning opportunities. The purpose of this pilot was to vet the newly-developed, Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice Student Curriculum Reflection Worksheet (IPSW) to determine if it could meet stakeholder needs after revision.

Methods. This mixed methods pilot utilized convenience sampling across disciplines to engage students and clinical preceptors. Qualitative analysis occurred through use of thematic analysis of open text data. Quantitative analysis included descriptive statistics to illustrate gains in IPE competence which occurred through examination of the numerical data from IPE-based instruments.

Results. Preliminary analysis demonstrated the impact on future practice for the participating students and that clinicians appreciated the practicality of the IPSW as well as the diminished time commitment needed to complete the tool. The student reflections illustrated enhanced confidence in connecting with other disciplines and understanding of other scopes of practice.

Conclusion. Wider implementation of the IPSW has shown to be less daunting due to its ease of integration into the clinic workday. Using the IPSW allowed for the student and the clinical preceptor to influence stronger, positive outcomes of patients and clients.
