Abstract

Over the past 45 years, Bahamian Educators have observed changes to the educational system. These vicissitudes have resulted in various implications for educators, as well as throughout Bahamian society. The purpose of this study is to describe the changes in the Bahamian educational system from the testimonials of Bahamian educators and to highlight their feelings ranging from joy to concern over this period. The study is designed to answer the questions: (1) How do Bahamian educators describe the changes in the pillars that supported the entire educational system that occurred pre and post national independence? (2) How did Bahamian educators feel about these changes?

A purposive sample was employed identifying 12 Bahamian educators who were employed within the private or public educational sector before 1973 and served for at least 25 years as a teacher or administrator. The study was completed using semi-structured interviews with a narrative approach. The findings indicated that there were numerous changes in the governance, framework, diversity and resource allocation in education and that Bahamian Educators’ emotions varied during this time. Findings of this research study hope to add literature and assist Bahamian Education officials in making informed decisions in the future.
