Abstract
Students in postsecondary educational settings present within their respective programs with a variety of psychosocial factors influencing their mental health and well-being. While each individual student’s strengths may support their passion for learning and eagerness to succeed, barriers may impede their achievement of academic goals and extracurricular involvement. It is critical to examine such factors which may undermine student success and well-being in order to better serve the students and enrich their educational experiences. This session aims to identify the contributing factors which influence a student’s psychosocial well-being, then review evidence-based interventions to address these pertinent areas. Upon conclusion of this course, attendees will be prepared to embed and/or recommend strategies to improve mental health and well-being for their students.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will explain two evidence-based reasons why students in a postsecondary educational setting may present with difficulties in mental health and well-being.
Participants will identify three interventions supported by evidence which can be used to improve student mental health and well-being in a postsecondary educational setting.
Participants will articulate two potential risks which may occur if faculty and staff fail to adequately address student mental health and well-being.
