Abstract
The purpose of this applied dissertation was to provide a high-quality afterschool program in an elementary school by providing a safe environment and enrichment activities. The afterschool program that previously existed at the elementary school was primarily day care and did not include enrichment activities. Parents, students, and program personnel were dissatisfied with the program and wanted a change.
To effect change, the writer implemented a school operated afterschool program using building-level staff for program personnel. The program included opportunities for children to complete homework with assistance and to participate in enrichment opportunities. Procedures were established to provide a safe afterschool environment.
All of the objectives of this applied dissertation were successfully met with positive feedback from parents and students in every measured area. The data indicated that the afterschool program had a safe environment, provided a time for assistance with and completion of homework, and scheduled enrichment activities for students.
Numerous reports exist on the evaluation and benefits of afterschool programs. This applied dissertation focused on providing a safe environment in which children had the opportunity to complete homework and participate in enrichment activities
