Short Description

Teachers can expand student learning by creating rubrics that align with course and unit objectives and using them to efficiently elicit student work that meets expectations and provide meaningful feedback to students. This session will provide a brief rationale for using rubrics in online course design and then present best practices for creating and using rubrics to advance student learning.

Abstract

Assessment should support student learning and provide useful information to both teachers and students. Further, students should be informed about what is expected of them and how their work will be measured. Evaluation instruments of quality for online course design, written as rubrics, include standards of assessment and call for specific and descriptive criteria for the evaluation of student work. Rubrics are tools for meeting these standards of assessment.
