Short Description
Enhancing instruction with active learning increases student engagement, which in turn yields higher learning outcomes and greater retention. Determining where to start or how to incorporate online learning strategies in an online environment can be overwhelming. Part II of this series will ensure that attendees can articulate the benefits of and create an online role-play environment to bring active learning into the online or blended classroom.
Abstract
In this Snapshot presentation, participants will briefly explore the concept of active learning through the use of online role-play in an online or blended learning environment. This presentation will provide attendees with key takeaways on how active learning can increase student interaction with their peers and the content when the course and/or assignments have been properly prepared for the implementation of role-play activities. The facilitator will showcase various examples of role-play in the online or blended learning environment to either be replicated or adapted within attendees’ own classes at their institutions or for instructional designers to be able to present to instructional faculty as suggestions for their own implementation.
Role play activities offer great variety in both approach, due to the numerous ways it can be structured, and length of time offered within the course, as they can be placed within a single assignment or immersive throughout the entire course duration.Beyond an examination of the literature regarding the use of role play as an active learning technique, this session will delve into discussion regarding options for use, its versatility, and resolve misconceptions regarding this trending topic. Due to this guidance and collaborative discussion, it is the facilitator’s hope that attendees will leave this snapshot presentation with sparks of new innovative ways to transform a passive online or blended learning experience into an active one.
