Short Description

An overview of images and their use in online classes will be provided to assist distance educators in becoming familiar with permissions and restrictions on their use, such as copyright, fair use, public domain and Creative Commons. Tools to help instructors locate ownership and permissions for images they have already curated, like Reverse Image Searching, will be explored, as well as documenting image information with metadata and free image collections.

Abstract

Online and distance learning classes rely on images to help convey information to students, illustrate information, and break up heavy text within courses. In order to use images properly within these classes, instructors need to be familiar with basic information about copyright, fair use, Creative Commons, and public domain works. This includes knowing where to locate information about these topics and understanding the various types of permission for use, as well as restrictions of use. Having examples of citations within the online environment also can be very helpful for instructors. Image curators often already have images that they have previously found, but may be uncertain of the permissions applicable to each specific image. Reverse Image search engines allow instructors to locate the image owner and the permissions for use granted for that particular image by comparing their known image with images found online. Once permissions are found, images can easily be documented with metadata within their “Properties,” creating a lasting collection of information that is tied directly that that image which can be accessed at any time for reference. Lastly, selected collections of free images will be explored for searching or browsing of specific images for their use. A handout will be provided and a link to an online LibGuide (http://libguides.fau.edu/images).
