Textbook Publishing in the Digital Age

Abstract

Is the printed, bound textbook doomed in the era of digital documents? This session will attempt to answer why some textbook publishers are eliminating printed books in favor of "digital-only" materials, and the pros and cons of this controversial approach. Next, the idea of "just-in-time" printing of instructional materials will be explained, as will the development approaches used by 21st century publishers, such as Information Age Publishing. Finally, the role of authors in the digital age will be the theme of a question and answer session.

Presenter(s) Biography

George F. Johnson is a graduate of Colorado State University. He began his career in the printing world, eventually transitioning over to the publishing industry. Founded in 1999, IAP is a social science publisher of academic and scholarly book series, monographs, journals, handbooks, and encyclopedia. IAP's goal is to serve the academic community by developing outlets for scholars to publish high quality professional works. To date, IAP has over 185 different book series, a dozen journals, and a variety of handbooks and encyclopedias across seven disciplines throughout the academic community.
