Abstract

The impetus for this project came from a colleague wanting to learn how to use NVivo. We decided to make this a beneficial experience for both of us: she would learn how to use NVivo and I would get her insights into how I could better teach my doctoral students to both use the software as well as approach data analysis. The majority of the doctoral students at my university have little to no exposure to qualitative research before they take the introductory qualitative research class and often struggle with analysis, so we hoped that her background and experience would mirror those of my students. For this project, we met once a week for a month; we audio recorded our meetings to capture our conversations about analysis and the use of NVivo. We also both kept journals, which allowed us to reflect on the learning process. The data from our experiences provide insight into how to teach qualitative data analysis to students coming from quantitative backgrounds in ways that may make them more comfortable.
