Abstract

Novice qualitative researchers require a unique portfolio of critical, creative, and problem solving skills to navigate their development as qualitative researchers. This educational session will present Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats method for facilitating perspective taking, and teach participants how the method can be used for structuring researcher memos. Attendees will learn the general concept of parallel thinking, a detailed introduction to the Six Thinking Hats method, their purpose, and application to qualitative research.

Comments

The Six Thinking Hats method is a thought focusing process designed by Edward de Bono which describes a tool for individual thinking involving six colored metaphorical hats. Six Thinking Hats, and the associated idea of parallel thinking, provide a means for individuals and groups to coordinate thinking, and in so doing, think more effectively, and deeply. The Six Thinking Hats method can assist the novice qualitative researcher to construct meaningful, and reflexive, researcher memos. At its core, this method provides qualitative researchers the means to engage with themselves, in multi-perspectival conversations with themselves, as researchers.
