Description

Physical therapy is a healthcare career choice with purpose, flexibility, deep meaning and personal fulfillment. Beginning as a Bachelor level Physical Therapist (PT) from the State University of New York at Buffalo (now University of Buffalo), Dr. Stern exemplifies lifelong learning related to physical therapy practice. She also holds a Master of Science degree (MSM) from Rollins College, a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from Nova Southeastern University with a health administration specialty and a transition Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (DPT) from AT Still University.

Dr. Stern has been active on the clinical side of PT, administrative positions, the professional association – American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) on the Florida state level and local level and education.

She has witnessed the growth of the profession and journey from the BS degree to the current doctoral level, residency and fellowship training.

The diversity of the profession has intrigued Dr. Stern from the very start of her career. As PTs work with patient and clients of all ages, from birth to the oldest of the old, she has engaged in professional pursuits that are open to all PTs; pediatrics in the school system, acute care, sports; working with professional athletes through her hospital work, orthopedic out-patient with manual therapy certification, rehabilitation including geriatric rehab in skilled nursing and acute rehabilitation, consultation with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, community service, home health and other professional certifications and initiatives. Prevention of Medical Errors and risk management, a state mandated continuing education requirement for health professionals in Florida, is one of her areas of expertise. She is one of several instructors in Florida that teaches the required course. She was one of the first PTs in the country to concentrate and teach documentation and co-authored one of the first texts in PT documentation that included reimbursement and Medicare requirements.

Her journey as a PT professional includes conversion of the once standard 5 day M – F hospital work schedule to continuous 7 day, recognizing that individuals who are ill and need PT intervention, are ill everyday; not just M-F. She introduced flex working schedules when the standard was 9 – 5, full-time and job sharing. In the PT education world, Dr. Stern developed the concept of collaborative clinical education as an integrated curriculum component for early introduction of clinical experience that is now required for accreditation and is currently referred to as ICE – Integrated Clinical Education. The concept of collaborative clinical education introduced the practice model for students in which multiple students are directly supervised by a single PT faculty member in early learning stages. A long time supporter of community service, she was the change agent in the NSU PT program in introducing a service learning program and is currently a Clinic Director for the Special Olympics FunFitness program.

Dr. Stern was one of the first faculty members in the NSU PT department. She currently serves as the Director of Clinical Education and also participates in student assessment, Interprofessional Education initiatives in the Health Professions Division, the interprofessional diabetes outreach program, service learning, and assisting with educational units in different components of the curriculum including basic skills, lymphedema management and geriatrics.

The opportunities in physical therapy are endless. Changing reimbursement and an evolving healthcare environment, create opportunities for innovative PT pursuits and creative thinking. According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics published most recently, the job outlook for 2016 – 2026 is 28% growth, with median pay as of 2017 $86,850/year. Dr. Stern’s career has included a wide variety of experiences. Her career path and journey exemplify the variety and flexibility of the profession and the passion that leads to professional success.
