Method: The project was a cross-sectional study of two student cohorts of graduate occupational therapy students from two campuses of the same not for profit university. Three instruments were used to collect data: Fieldwork Performance Evaluation (from a completed Level II fieldwork experience), the Adult Temperament Questionnaire, and the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile.

Results: Scores from the three research instruments were analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate procedures from the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results indicate correlations do exist between scores on subsections of the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile and Fieldwork Performance Evaluation, as well as scores from the Adult Temperament Questionnaire and Fieldwork Performance Evaluation.

Conclusions: Clinical education experiences are an integral part of an occupational therapy program curriculum. This is one of the first studies to examine the relationship between sensory processing and temperament patterns and how those patterns correlate with higher success in fieldwork performance. There is evidence of predictability of fieldwork success based on certain temperament and sensory processing patterns as determined by the two assessments. Interpretation of results highlight the potential benefit for occupational therapy fieldwork educators using the Adolescent / Adult Sensory Profile and Adult Temperament Questionnaire as tools for students to promote self-awareness for optimal performance during fieldwork experiences.
