Abstract

In this 50-minute interactive workshop, participants will learn about the main principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework which focuses on multiple means of engagement, representation, and action & expression. According to CAST (2024), “The goal of UDL is learner agency that is purposeful & reflective, resourceful & authentic, strategic & action-oriented.” UDL offers a framework to create accessible and engaging learning experiences for all students, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds. Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into this UDL framework presents opportunities for educators to design inclusive, adaptable, and personalized curricula.

This presentation will explore how AI technologies can:

  • support UDL principles by providing real-time insights into student learning patterns and styles;
  • identifying barriers to learning; and
  • suggesting differentiated instructional strategies.

Participants will learn about practical AI applications, such as:

  • tailoring reading materials for students with varying literacy levels;
  • creating AI-driven formative assessments to gauge student understanding; and
  • using AI-powered tools to create multimedia content that caters to diverse learning preferences.

This hands-on workshop aims to equip educators, curriculum designers, students, and administrators with the knowledge and tools to leverage AI effectively within a UDL framework, promoting an inclusive and equitable learning environment. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies for incorporating AI into their practice, supporting the goal of providing a high-quality education for all students.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understanding and applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  2. Applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to curriculum design.
  3. Designing personalized, differentiated, and inclusive learning experiences.
  4. Assessing barriers to learning using AI.
  5. Synthesizing AI and UDL to re-evaluate existing curriculum with the goal of inclusive instruction for all learners.
