Executive Summary
A Strategic Plan to Enhance an Electronic Health Record System in a Hospital Setting for a Competitive Edge in a Dynamic Healthcare Sector. Erica Richardson McPhaul, 2024: Strategic Research Project, Nova Southeastern University, Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. Keywords: Electronic Health Record, interoperability, healthcare standards, strategic planning, data integration This strategic research project is designed to provide a comprehensive analysis and strategic plan for Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic is leveraging the information technology to ensure improved patient care and efficiency. To understand the problem faced by the hospital, a detailed review of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats are evaluated through the internal factor evaluation and external factor evaluation. The analysis identifies poor interoperability with external healthcare systems as the major problem. Four possible solutions are proposed: (a) standardized data formats, (b) enhancing integration capabilities, (b) adopting health information exchange platforms, and (c) collaboration with external partners. Standardizing Data Format is the chosen solution for this strategic research project as it will significantly improve the interoperability in healthcare systems. To achieve standardized data formats, two strategies are proposed which are the adoption of international standards to enhance healthcare interoperability and training healthcare providers. Global standards and healthcare provider training are the key strategic alternatives evaluated. The first strategy improves healthcare data interoperability to improve care quality and efficiency. The second technique trains healthcare staff to use standardized data formats and modern technologies. Strategic options are assessed via the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix. Adoption of international standards increase attractiveness to 4.80 versus 4.44 for healthcare training and education. This score shows that Cleveland Clinic could benefit from using international standards as a strategic approach to better leverage its strengths and prospects. Adopting international standards requires numerous phases. First, healthcare data systems, procedures, and infrastructure must be assessed to find areas for improvement. Second, personnel and stakeholders need comprehensive training on international standards and their application. Thirdly, Cleveland Clinic must research and choose healthcare data and interoperability standards that match its demands. Finally, a cross-functional group must oversee standard adoption, define scope, and set a timeline. The success of applying global standards will be measured by system integration, data transfer, user satisfaction, and data quality. Continuous monitoring and feedback ensure growth and quick problem resolution. To conclude, the strategic analysis shows that international standards improve patient care and operational efficiency at Cleveland Clinic. Cleveland Clinic can survive in a fast-changing healthcare environment with this strategy, intensive training, and a solid action plan.
