Abstract

This practicum was designed to improve performance in solving mathematical word problems by fifth-grade students by decreasing anxiety and increasing numeracy, text comprehension, and time spent on solving problems. The writer created a Parent Problem Solving Packet to involve parents in an attempt to create more time spent on solving non routine problems outside of class. Calculator activities were planned and executed in the classroom in order that the time usually 1pent in repetitive computation could be used in mathematical problem solving A Calculator Club which met after school was established. The Club field test activities for use in the total class setting. Student created and shared their own multi-step and nonroutine problem thereby extending mathematic into their own environment, and they created their own test from their own problems. The students also participated in the State Student Stook Market Game. The student showed improvement both in ability to solve mathematical word problem• and in attitude toward mathematical word problems .
