Abstract

This practicum actuated a series of parent programs designed to increase the active participation and involvement of parents in the education of their language learning disabled elementary aged children. these programs were designed to increase awareness of exceptional student education, acquaint parents with potential resources, and increase participation in the education of their children through games, homework involvement, and discussion. Ibe writer developed and administered pre- and post-parent surveys to parents from two language learning disabilities classrooms. Three parents participation programs were designed to respond to the needs ascertained from the results of this survey. Programs included a video presentation of learning disabilities, a presentation by the program specialists and a. Make-A-Game night. A majority of parents responded to the parent participation programs and surveys indicated an improvement in then attitude regarding language learning disabilities. Although not all practicum objectives were met. this writer feels the synergistic outcome of this practicum was encouraging. Parents want the programs to continue and arc working toward improved parent to parent communication.
