Abstract

This applied dissertation was designed to examine the efficacy of the adolescent community reinforcement approach with and without contingency management to improve the lives of adolescents with substance use disorder in relapse prevention programs. Adolescents with substance use disorder do not have access to effective continuing care and relapse prevention in rural towns in the state of Georgia. There is no ongoing care for adolescents with substance use disorder that incorporates a comprehensive treatment plan that includes community reinforcement approaches along with contingency management.

Relying on a multi-element research design, the researcher investigated the interaction between the adolescent community reinforcement approach with and without contingency management and its effect on the quantity and frequency of substance use of two young adults with substance use disorder. The participants participated in a 60-minute session twice weekly for 4 weeks. The session’s goals for each participant were personalized. They consisted of recognition of the substance use triggers, resisting the urge to consume alcohol, self-management strategy practices, conflict resolution skill acquisition, emotional regulation, open communication skills, and problem-solving skill practices. While in the program, the participants reported daily consumption of alcohol.

An analysis of the data revealed that both participants consumed zero amount of alcohol while in the adolescent community reinforcement approach with contingency management in 4 weeks. Because the adolescent community reinforcement approach encompassed individualized support to ongoing treatment, recognition of the substance use triggers, resistance to the urge to consume alcohol, self-management strategy practices, conflict resolution skill acquisition, emotional regulation, open communication, and problem-solving skill practices, there is no conclusive evidence that supports the efficacy of the adolescent community reinforcement approach alone or in combination with contingency management as well as individualized sessions that are part of the approach.
