Short Description
The success of understanding of Adult Nursing Students’ Perceptions of Social Presence in Facilitator-Created Subject-Specific Videos in an Online Nursing Course will be the topic of this presentation. The contents will include viewing YouTube videos that the presenter /online educator created to support and guide online facilitator’ creation and production of videos to complement online text-based educational forums. Challenges to adult online students’ sense of teacher presence, feelings of isolation, and need for improved engagement in the online platform will be addressed.
Abstract
Experiences as an online adult nursing educator spurred the need to improve aspects of delivery of information particularly advanced critical nursing concepts. The presentation session will cover how online facilitators can create videos to support and enhance their educational courses to feel like a real classroom and decrease feeling of social isolation as an online student.
In particular, this will include facilitator theoretical skills and the creation of a “brand” like name and following with their subject-specific short-segment created videos. This will be shown with the application of You Tube videos that the presenter has made. Production of the videos will be reviewed and how this can easily be incorporated into distant or hybrid educational platforms. Goals of cataloging the videos will be discussed for continuing resource for all of the student body and online educators.
Key factors of social presence and media richness will be substantively shown to work toward creating a social presence online.
The audience should be educators particularly online educators. Kinesthetic, facial, body posture, eye contact, politeness, and hand gestures will be shown to improve video engagement. Furthermore, the incorporation of interactive, moving, colorful backgrounds behind the educator either choreographed or not choreographed will also be explored.The presenter is a 30 plus year practicing Registered Nurse that prior to the video had no specific understanding of how to create engaging short-segment broadcasts. Explanation of how hand-held mobile devices and minimal budget can produce these videos and the create the “face” on the online facilitator.The presenter pathway to success will be shared to encourage the need for online facilitators to “step-up” and meet the needs of today’s adult learning online student.
