Abstract

We utilized a life story protocol in order to examine seven transgender (trans) individuals’ experiences transitioning while in college. By seeking to have each participant’s life story instead of focusing strictly on their college experiences, we were able to better communicate our care for the participant as a whole and unique individual, and were also able to examine their college experiences within the wider context of their life. Participants generally shared their appreciation with us for this practice, though one remained unconvinced that we cared about “more than just the trans stuff.” Overall, we felt that this method was productive for working with trans participants, and encourage other researchers to use this method in the future.
