This paper will present how external subject matter experts also known as "Grey Beards" who are outsided a formal military organization are able to influence the innovation of an organization by providing unofficial influence in the form of advice. This presentation will outline how the blended use of both social network analysis as well as semi-structured interviews to both show the structure and how this relationship is present in organizational communication.
