Analysis of Community Impact and Sustainability: A Comparative of Humana Inc. and Toyota Motor North America

Alvin Sherman Library

Climate change affects all aspects of human life. With the depletion of the Ozone layer, increasing frequency of natural disasters, health impact, and more, expectations must be set for large corporations to follow the principle of sustainability. This concept focuses on how businesses can prioritize environmental health, social justice, and economic development of nearby communities they serve. The most common practice for reporting on sustainable issues is through annual iterations of environmental, sustainable, and governance (ESG) reports. This qualitative study examines the sustainability efforts of two major corporations: Humana, Inc. and Toyota Motor North America (TMNA). Humana, Inc. is the fourth-largest health insurance provider in the U.S. and Toyota Motor North America is the second-largest automobile company in the U.S. with over 11 domestic manufacturing plants. This qualitative research study relies on in-depth analysis of publicly available documents like ESG reports, 10K financial reports, sustainability reports, amongst others. By examining these sources, this research highlights Humana Inc.'s specific actions to their commitments to the social determinants of health and environmental impact while also analyzing Toyota’s efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and economic impact to their communities. In addition, this study assesses recent controversies and setbacks that do not align to their core mission values. This comparison highlights both the similarities and differences in their overall approach, allowing for a more nuanced and detailed comparison. Ultimately, this research offers valuable lessons for other organizations to enhance their sustainable interventions, contributing to a healthier planet.
