No Evidence of Recovery After the DWHOS in the Abundance of the Five Dominant Families of Micronektonic Crustaceans in the Gulf of Mexico

Researcher Information

Abstract

Micronektonic crustaceans are an essential element of the global marine food web. A number of studies conducted between 2011 and 2015 indicated that the was a significant decrease in all families of micronektonic crustaceans sampled on these cruises. The sampling was in the vicinity of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which may have contributed to the die-off. Two datasets from 2021 and 2022 were analyzed in the current study to determine if there have been any signs of recovery. Statistical analysis determined that there was no significant difference between the 2021 and 2022 datasets, even though the abundances for three families were still declining, indicating that there are no signs of recovery in this ecosystem.
