Abstract

Though Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought about significant transformation in every industry in recent years, it has been the advent of ChatGPT that has seemed to spark a surge of innovative ideas and debates, especially within the realm of academic publishing. The potential applications of AI in this field, including improving manuscript readability, enhancing content generation, and the prospect of AI-powered reviewers, have generated considerable excitement, presenting opportunities for streamlining the writing and publishing processes. Nonetheless, this rapid evolution has also introduced ethical challenges that authors and publishers must grapple with, including navigating intricate policy updates and additions, as well as devising new strategies to maintain integrity in the face of potential misuse and manipulation of AI tools. This presentation aims to delve into the responsible utilization of AI tools to support authors in their publishing endeavors, offering insights into best practices and ethical considerations. Additionally, it will shed light on the intriguing and controversial applications of AI within academic publishing, showcasing the ongoing transformation of the industry.

Author Bio

  • Lindsay Wertman, President, IGI Global: Ms. Wertman began her career in academic publishing in 2006 overseeing new project commissioning and author and editor relations, while also managing and developing various editorial projects. During her early years in the industry, she enhanced and expanded the content coverage and volume of material being released by IGI Global. Within a five-year timespan, she was promoted to: Assistant Acquisitions Editor, Acquisitions Editor, Assistant Director of Editorial Content, Editorial Director, and then served as the Managing Director of IGI Global for more than 10 years. In 2022 she has been formally appointed as the new President of IGI Global. As President, she focuses much of her attention on the strategic direction and vision of IGI Global in the areas of new product development, content strategy, ethics and inclusivity, as well as image and branding. Prior to beginning her career path with IGI Global more than fifteen years ago, her previous experience included positions and expertise in the areas of public relations, writing/editing, educational marketing, as well as community outreach. She has also served as proceedings coordinator for the Information Resources Management Association (IRMA), contributed as a guest author and column editor for various industry publications (including Against the Grain), and served on the organizing committee for Peer Review Week. During her spare time, she serves as the Editorial Coordinator for the World Forgotten Children Foundation (WFCF) (a private non-profit foundation).
  • Melissa Wagner, Vice President of Editorial, IGI Global: Ms. Wagner began her career in academic publishing in 2015. She first began working in the Marketing Department, facilitating communications with editors, authors, librarians, and partners as well as developing promotions and campaigns for IGI Global’s full portfolio of books and journals. Over the next few years, she was promoted to Marketing Manager before then transitioning into the Acquisitions Department as the Managing Editor of Acquisitions due to her expertise and knowledge in content matter and recruitment. She worked as the Editorial Director, directly overseeing the Acquisitions Department while assisting with the development, production, and metadata creation of all books and journals and is now the Vice President of Editorial. Ms. Wagner holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Mary Washington. Prior to joining the publishing industry, her previous experience included acquisitions and collections management, museum education, community outreach, marketing/sales, editing/technical editing, creative and professional writing, and archival work.
