Proposal Description

A radical religio-political movement challenged the Moroccan state and its response to COVID 19 on the night of March 22nd, 2020. The movement failed to move Moroccans out of compliance with the COVID 19 lockdown, and its attempts backfired on social media and in politics. This paper explores the causes of this failure and locates the cause within dynamics and positions taken by more mainstream expressions of political Islamism, both within and in opposition to the government.
