Description

Purpose: Proficiency in pre-writing and writing skills is crucial for academic and occupational success, underscoring the need for dependable and cost-effective assessment tools. This is particularly relevant in resource-constrained regions like Argentina, where PER2 scales are readily accessible. The study's objective is to establish convergent validity between the PER2 pre-writing (PER2-P) and writing (PER2-W) scales and the Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (VMI).

Design/ setting/participants: Methods: A prospective research design was implemented in schools and pediatric clinics, involving children aged 5-8 in the U.S. (n=37, M = 6.41 years, SD= 0.92) and Argentina (n=33, M = 6.63 years, SD= 1.11) receiving occupational therapy services for pre-writing and handwriting skills. To reduce Type I error, all correlations and group comparisons were Bonferroni-adjusted (a= .0125).

Results/Conclusion: Results showed that age did not significantly correlate with any measures, and there was no statistically significant age difference between the two groups. Notably, the U.S. group exhibited superior pre-writing skills compared to their Argentine counterparts, with a moderate correlation between PER2 scales and VMI. This suggests the potential utility of these tools in various educational and clinical settings, thus contributing to accessible and reliable assessment methods for children's pre-writing & writing abilities.
