Description

While conducting fieldwork in the Philippines, my lab partner and I got caught in a flash flood during a storm near the Twin Lakes by Dumaguete. As we were making our way back to the coast, we saw a tip box with bananas on it and asked our guide to stop. As soon as we pulled over, several monkeys jumped out to greet us. Our guide told us that after a super typhoon, when food was scarce, several monkeys would try to steal from locals. After a while, they built a relationship in which the monkeys would descend from the cliffs twice a day to eat and lounge, then make their way back up. Eventually, the residents set up a tip box to buy fruit for the monkeys, hoping tourists would contribute.
