Description

Yamilet Sempé is a Cuban-born, French-American artist with an international profile. Known for a sophisticated body of work dominated by both nebulous and geometric abstraction, she frequently draws from esoteric themes and maintains a sense of ambiguity to allow for diverse interpretations. She has been recognized in the arts through press coverage, critical reviews, literature, awards, high profile commissions, and international fine art auctions. While living in France, she led an ambitious arts restoration project of the historic castle Chateau du Beyrat in France, during which she personally executed the restoration of the chateau’s frescos and coats of arms, as well as designed new outdoor elements with walkways and sculpture.

A signature element of her work is the prominent use of the color orange. She draws influence from leading Cuban artists José Mijares and Carmen Herrera as well as Swedish painter Hilma af Klint. Sempé’s work has been exhibited and sold alongside Herrera, Wifredo Lam, Rufino Tamayo, Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Agustín Cardenas, Beatriz Milhazes, Gabriel Orozco, Jesús Rafael Soto, and Yoshitomo Nara.

As one of the few internationally active female artists of Cuban origin who are working within geometric abstraction, Sempé has been the focus of several critiques, including by Greek professor Héctor Haralambous, who has written of her geometric piece Equilibrium. She has sold work through the important French auction house DROUOT and has been represented by galleries in California and Miami.

This piece is of her geometric series and showcases her signature use of the color orange to highlight and infuse dynamic motion into her work. It also illustrates her ability to create “worlds within words” in her work, alluding not only to personal inner worlds but also the esoteric principle of reality being a continuum of microcosms and macrocosms, down to the cellular and atomic levels.
