Description
Adriano Nicot is a leading Latin American Neoexpressionist. He was mentored by prominent Cuban Expressionist Antonia Eiriz and supported by other noted Cuban artists Manuel and Hilda Vidal and also influenced by Cuban master Nelson Dominguez. Nicot has exhibited internationally, won awards for his work, and has been widely covered by art critics throughout his career. He is most known for his highly psychological portraits of invented characters, his Horses series, and his mythology themed series. His unique style is influenced by prehistoric cave art and defined by his moody, textured applications with boldly monochromatic backgrounds.
This piece is part of his character series and is a double portrait that is inspired by archetypes of Cuban country people, in this case a couple. Its flattened perspective and enigmatic profiles call to mind Ancient Egyptian art as well as the suggestive form of hearts between the figures, reflecting Nicot’s ancient influences and psychological layerings within his art.
