Abstract

Artificial Intelligence and digital tools are rapidly reshaping the landscape of higher education, offering faculty powerful ways to streamline course design, personalize learning, and improve accessibility. Yet, they also raise important questions around academic integrity and ethical use. Drawing on our experiences as a Learning Design Consultant and developers of online courses for delivery at Nova Southeastern University, this session will explore practical strategies for integrating AI and digital tools into course design without compromising rigor or equity. Participants will see examples of how AI can support tasks such as workload balancing, accessibility design, feedback generation, and content alignment with learning outcomes. Tools like Perusall will be highlighted for promoting social annotation and collaborative engagement, Microsoft Copilot for streamlining faculty workflows within NSU’s AI ecosystem, and NotebookLM for organizing, synthesizing, and aligning course resources with learning objectives. Alongside innovation, the session will address safeguards for academic honesty, bias mitigation, and responsible implementation. Faculty and instructional designers will leave with actionable frameworks, vetted tools, and NSU-specific resources they can use to enhance student engagement, support diverse learners, and maintain trust in digital learning environments.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify opportunities for using AI and digital tools (Perusall, Copilot, NotebookLM) to streamline instructional design.

  2. Evaluate AI tools for enhancing accessibility and personalizing learning.

  3. Apply safeguards that protect academic integrity in AI-supported environments.

  4. Integrate Canvas, Perusall, NotebookLM, and Copilot into online/hybrid courses in alignment with outcomes.

  5. Develop a responsible framework for adopting AI using NSU’s institutional AI resources.
