Description

The emergence of ChatGPT and of other generative AI tools has sparked debates across societal sectors, especially in academia. Higher education institutions have varied reactions, from contemplating bans on AI for academic work to leaving decisions to individual instructors. To explore how instructors have addressed students’ AI use in their courses, an approach is to analyze their syllabus policies. In this session I will show findings of a study with the purpose of exploring instructors’ decisions and perspectives of students’ AI use as communicated in the course syllabus policies. I will also share how I used ChatGPT to assist me, as well as recommendations for its use.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe diverse reactions of instructors regarding AI for learning.
  2. Discuss what instructors are concerned about and what they perceive as benefits of AI for learning.
  3. Reflect on their own decisions and perspectives regarding students’ AI use in their courses.
  4. Identify ChatGPT uses for research purposes.
