Abstract
Faculty are being called on more and more to demonstrate comprehensive and effective classroom management and student engagement techniques inside and outside of the classroom. Educators are being asked to teach a growing cohort of learners with unprecedented sets of challenges (e.g. academic, social, psychological, etc.) This workshop will feature a survey of teaching best practices, tips, and useful work arounds to help navigate these difficult and trying situations. We ask participants to come prepared to share their experience via words of wisdom, lessons learned, A-ha moments, hard-won victories, and not-to-be-repeated-ever moments for a collaborative learning experience. This highly interactive session addresses several student scenarios, effective engagement strategies, including how to establish a relationship with student while maintaining appropriate boundaries, addressing issues common to modern students (e.g. executive skills, time management, etc.), to mediating anxiety and stress (exploring limits, resources, referrals), and all while encouraging students to develop self-regulated learning behaviors. Attendees will work in small groups with role play while we provide hands-on guidance to becoming a more effective and mindful educator through these challenging situations.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will:
- Identify different classroom management strategies and their effects and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each strategy.
- Determine the appropriate strategies to employ to prevent disruptive behaviors and to address disruptive behaviors as they occur.
- Model and develop prosocial behaviors and collaborative relationships with and among learners to promote appropriate behavior.
