Abstract

This session will help participants to understand the concepts of inclusive language and the harmful effects of exclusive language in shaping stereotypes, bias and prejudice. It explores positive outcomes of using inclusive language to promote diversity, inclusion, belonging, and respect in higher education settings. It seeks to provide guidance and how to implement inclusive language and share best practices to incorporate into your practice at NSU.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe working definitions related to Belonging, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
  2. Provide examples of inclusive vs. non-inclusive language.
  3. Discuss the potential aspects of exclusive language: gender, race, ability.
  4. Apply new techniques in using a person's preferred name and pronouns.
  5. Evaluate how you will implement and practice inclusive language in your communication toolkit.
