Abstract
Education is a pillar of our institution. As such, we are educating young adults, but it would be beneficial to extend our endeavor even further. One remarkable initiative in this context is “Aim High,” a program conducted at the Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, to engage high school students in the health professions. During this session, I will present a unique case involving an eager middle school student who expressed a strong interest in active learning and research, both key aspects at NSU. Inspired by the existence of internship programs for high school students at other institutions, I embarked on the experiment of trying to create a curriculum that could prepare the student to engage in the future in research activities.
To prepare high school students adequately, there is the need of training, and this is where generative AI, ChatGPT in this case, played a pivotal role. The development of adaptable curricula, exercises, and instructional materials has been possible in a fast and acceptable form. Following this case, I am fostering a collaborative brainstorming during this session, exploring with the audience other potential applications of AI in creating educational materials that can equip high school students to consider internships at NSU. This initiative underscores our commitment to innovation and education excellence.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:
- Describe how generative AI can be used in the design of curricula.
- Describe how prompting can improve curricula design.
- Discuss the model used to design curricula for high school students involved in research.
