Brief Bio / Description of Interviewee

“My name is Pedro. I am originally from Cuba and came here when I was 5. I have lived in Miami and in Lakeland, FL for the majority of my life. I came to Miami in 2004 and then in 2006, we came to Lakeland. Since then, I’ve stayed in Lakeland. I went to high school and undergrad there. Basically everything except, you know, medical school. Lakeland has a very small-town feel, even though it’s like a genuinely big area. Everybody knows each other. I'll go back sometimes and then I'll be at Marshalls or something, and then it's like, oh, I went to school with this kid or you run into someone you see at the gym. People are also very friendly. Right before I graduated undergrad. I was asked to go to an institutional review board at Lakeland Regional Health. They were opening their research office and then because of that I got to apply for a new research assistant position that they opened up. I probably think that was a big defining moment for me. I was able to meet a lot of really interesting doctors and learn a lot. It also helped me see what I like more about medicine. Because of that, I like emergency and internal med now. I was able to see a surgery or two.”
