René Marqués es indudablemente uno de los escritores más prolíficos de Puerto Rico. Sus textos, ya sean poesía, teatro, cuentos cortos, novelas o ensayos, generalmente han demostrado una relación intrínseca entre el estado político y cultural de la isla caribeña. En la mayoría de los casos, la crítica marquesiana ha enfatizado y enfocado el innegable enlace entre su producción literaria y su relación con lo político. Este ensayo hace un análisis de David y Jonatán tomando como punto de partida la relación de los personajes bíblicos David y Jonatán y el análisis de la performatividad de la masculinidad. Se presenta cómo se define y se va redefiniendo esta masculinidad y cómo se revela un deseo homosexual entre los personajes. Se revelarán momentos queer que desestabilizan la masculinidad y cuestionan esa misma masculinidad en dos tiempos históricos: el tiempo bíblico y la década de 1970 en Puerto Rico. En otras palabras, este ensayo ofrece una lectura de la obra de David y Jonatán , en la que se revelan las construcciones de género y de la sexualidad que rechazan la heteronormatividad

English abstract

Rene Marqués is undoubtedly one of the most prolific writers of Puerto Rico. His texts, whether they be poetry, theater, short stories, novels, or essays have generally shown an intrinsic relationship between the political and cultural state of the Caribbean island. In most cases, the Marquesian studies have emphasized and focused on the undeniable link between his literary production and its relation to politics. This essay makes an analysis of David and Jonathan , using the relationship of the two biblical characters David and Jonathan as a starting point as well as the analysis of the performativity of masculinity. It explores how masculinity is defined and redefined and how a sexual desire between the two characters develops. Queer moments evolve that destabilize masculinity and question it at two historical moments: biblical times and in the 1970s in Puer - to Rico. In other words, this essay offers an interpretation of the play of David and Jonathan revealing constructions of gender and sexuality which reject heteronormativity
