Executive Summary

Investing in People: A Strategic Plan for Burnout Prevention Dr. Berveline Moise, 2026: Strategic Research Project, Nova Southeastern University, Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. Keywords: ADDIE model, burnout prevention, employee retention, Kirkpatrick framework, organizational change, supervisor support training.

This strategic research project was designed to address faculty and staff burnout at a private not-for-profit institution in southeast Florida. After conducting a strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats analysis, burnout emerged as a significant weakness. The solution identified was the implementation of a social support component. The quantitative strategic planning matrix identified Supervisor Support Training as the recommended strategy, with the highest total attractiveness score of 9.2. An action plan outlining five primary goals was created.

The action plan outlines five primary goals: (a) conducting a comprehensive needs assessment to identify stakeholders and the current organizational state, (b) designing the training curriculum using evidence-based supportive supervisor behaviors targeting the five core competencies (active listening, transparent communication, workload transparency, feedback practices, and role clarity), (c) developing course modules for the Canvas learning management system and launching the 90-day self-paced supervisor support training program across all supervisory levels, (d) implementing Kirkpatrick Levels 1 through 3 data collection immediately post-training to measure supervisor reactions, learning, and satisfaction, and (e) collecting and analyzing Kirkpatrick Levels 1 through 3 data at 3 months posttraining to measure behavioral change.

Supportive supervisor behaviors should be assessed annually during performance reviews to promote accountability and long-term sustainability of outcomes. The anticipated outcomes include a decrease in faculty and staff burnout and sustainable culture change within the organization. This strategic initiative demonstrates the institution's commitment to employee wellbeing and provides a replicable model for higher education organizations addressing similar workforce challenges.
