Executive Summary
This strategic research project was designed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the improvement processes at Florida State College at Jacksonville. This “community’s college” serves the city of Jacksonville, Florida, Duval County, and neighboring Nassau County, Florida, and thrives on empowering its constituents and citizens to participate in collaborative decision-making. An intensive strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats analysis was conducted that yielded 40 factors of 10 strengths, 10 weaknesses, 10 opportunities, and 10 threats within the institution. Afterwards, a thorough examination of the internal and external factor evaluations narrowed the factors from 40 to the one factor that would identify institutional gaps and implications. The primary strategic research factor selected as the problem was internal processes, based on the college’s lack of transparency in communication and department cohesiveness.
There were four identified solutions considered to address the problem of internal processes. The solution of clarification of duties and responsibilities was selected as the most viable and researched have the most profound impact on student and staff success. Through research, two strategies were identified, and, based on the Quantitative Strategic Plan Matrix, the strategy of the in-person training emerged slightly higher as having the best approach to solving the identified problem. The action plan that emerged would create a course within new student orientation and new employee onboarding that enables new stakeholders to explore program options, network with departments, and discover college services, preparing them to navigate the college’s unique opportunities from the start. The results of this research are promising and could benefit the college greatly if implemented. A recommendation would be to incorporate both strategy options embedded into the in-person training to provide the most information and success for stakeholders.
