Executive Summary

Higher education institutions are facing a continuously altered educational environment, where traditional procedures and policies are no longer effectively developing qualified talent. Higher education institutions are aware of such barriers, but have yet to fully address systematic structures and organizational cultures that continue this trend discovered as a global phenomenon. Understanding the attitudes and insight into the issues of succession planning in the field of higher education requires an extensive study on the topic. Research proposed strategic succession planning is essential and favor a competitive opportunity for the organization to retain internal knowledge-capital, develop organizational leaders, and increase business continuity growth. The importance of developing and implementing an internal succession management plan is beneficial for the smooth transition of leadership.

During situations of unplanned and abrupt personnel changes, a management plan will decrease leadership development needs and financial expenditure on recruitment because high-performing internal talent will have been previously trained and identified. The study explores strategies for increasing succession planning practices and lessening the threats associated with a decrease in long-term talent retention. The work provides an in-depth analysis of the pro, cons, and barriers of four potential solutions. The strategy selected for advancing business continuity in the organization is the development of a succession management plan that affirms a commitment to faculty, staff, and students. An action plan is introduced to provide a guide for implementation of the selected strategy. It is recommended that future studies examine the influence of leadership development programs implemented across a variety of industries and contexts.
