Executive Summary
This strategic research project was designed to provide further research on evidenced based solutions to address the problem of inconsistent supports for learners at risk for academic failure in schools. The completion of a strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats analysis revealed 40 strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, which after analysis ultimately revealed the aforementioned problem. The synthesis of prior research literature related to the problem of learners at risk for academic failure covered a vast range of remediation areas involved in aiding in students’ at risk for academic failures global success. Overall, the research studies revealed goals of identifying participants at-risk for core skills deficiencies, implemented a range or research based targeted interventions, and revealed findings. The prior research, along with other rating analysis aided in the selection of the Universal Design for Learning framework as the most viable intervention to address the problem.
Upon the determination of the intervention solution, the completion of a quantitative strategic plan matrix was utilized with the prior 40 external and internal factors for further analysis and rating using an attractiveness score to determine the selection of an implementation strategy. The research of four possible implementation strategies, along with the quantitative strategic plan matrix analysis revealed the use of a small scale pilot project as the most attractive option to use for the implementation of the Universal Design for Learning. When districts with a history of high academic achievement work toward continuous improvement, students struggling to learn the standards-based instruction are at increased risk for academic failure without the consistent, effective support to improve their academic and post-school outcomes. Therefore, the Universal Design for Learning was the focus of the strategic research project recommendation as a viable solution to ensure access for continued improvement through the integration of Universal Design for Learning.
