Executive Summary

A Strategic Framework for Teacher Growth and Retention. Shawntavia Wright-Johnson, 2025: Strategic Research Project, Nova Southeastern University, Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. Keywords: Mentorship Framework, Instructional Interventions, Academic Performance, Data-Driven Strategies, Evidence-Based Practices, Strategic Planning, Equity-Focused Interventions, and Program Evaluation.

In this Strategic Research Project, I examine the reading achievement gap between male and female fifth-grade scholars at Sample Elementary School. My analysis reveals that male scholars are disproportionately represented among those reading below grade level, indicating a clear need for targeted academic support. Drawing on both school-specific data and current research, I identify gaps in literacy instruction and intervention efforts that contribute to this disparity. To better understand the challenges and opportunities within the school, I conducted a comprehensive SWOT analysis and used a Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). These tools helped me compare potential strategies for improvement, ultimately leading me to recommend the implementation of a formalized mentorship framework as the most viable and impactful approach.

The proposed mentorship program aims to support struggling male readers by pairing them with trained mentors who will provide consistent academic guidance, motivation, and socio-emotional support. This initiative is designed to increase reading engagement, improve foundational literacy skills, and foster a positive academic identity among male scholars. Additionally, the project promotes collaboration among educators, administrators, and community partners to ensure successful implementation and long-term sustainability. By creating a structured and supportive environment tailored to the needs of male learners, this project aligns with broader efforts to promote educational equity and close achievement gaps. This SRP provides a replicable model that can inform future school-based interventions aimed at improving reading outcomes for underserved student populations while supporting data-driven and equity-focused decision-making in education.
