Executive Summary

The Impact of Teacher Mentorship and Professional Learning Communities on Improving Teacher Retention Rates. Candice N. Brock, 2025: Strategic Research Project, Nova Southeastern University, Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. Keywords: attrition, Professional Learning Community (PLC), retention, teacher shortage, teacher mentorship programs, teacher turnover

The purpose of this strategic research project is to thoroughly investigate and understand how the implementation of teacher mentorship programs and professional learning communities (PLCs) influences the rate at which teachers remain in the profession. Essentially, it aims to determine if, and to what extent, these two specific strategies can effectively combat teacher turnover. The problem addresses the pervasive and detrimental issue of teacher attrition and low teacher retention rates within the education system. This is a critical problem with wide-ranging negative consequences for students, schools, and the broader educational landscape. The solution proposed by this project is to systematically implement and optimize high-quality teacher mentorship programs and robust professional learning communities (PLCs) as primary interventions to enhance teacher retention.

The strategy will involve a multi-pronged approach to both investigate and address the problem and also focus on robust data collection and analysis, coupled with the development and evaluation of model interventions. The ultimate goal is to provide actionable insights and scalable solutions for educational systems facing teacher retention challenges. The key strategy will be the development and testing of best practice models for mentorship and PLCs. For this strategic research project, specific action steps would be developed to implement strategies such as developing needs assessments; fostering relationships with stakeholders and members of the community; enhancing technological infrastructure; launch faculty and student training initiatives; and establish ongoing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. A significant recommendation would be to mandate and adequately fund high-quality initial and ongoing training for both mentors and PLC facilitators.
