Executive Summary
This strategic research project was designed to provide a framework for enhancing nonprofit organization success. The project revealed the need for enhancing board diversity within organizations. Nonprofit organization success is recognized through various goals including fundraising efforts, community and social improvement, and organizational reputation. Diverse board members can help nonprofit organizations reach goals through increased community engagement, donor retention, strategic planning, and innovation. Following a SWOT analysis and a comprehensive literature review of possible solutions for the American Heart Association, building diverse boards was revealed as the best solution, which was comprehensive of the four solutions that were discovered. Through the utilization of the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix tool, proactive and intentional board member recruitment was indicated as the most effective strategy to use when building diverse boards. An action plan was developed to implement the strategy of proactive and intentional board member recruitment which showed the need of five action steps. In addition, the action plan reveals an evaluation process inclusive of key performance indicators of the strategy. The action plan serves as a framework for nonprofit organizations seeking to construct diverse boards.
Although the literature served as the foundation of this strategic research project and provided a valuable insight on developing diverse boards, limitations of the project were recognized through the peer review process and oral presentation. Recommendation includes the need of the implementer to track board success and indicate all factors contributing to outcomes. Finally, findings from the literature reviewed in this strategic research project serve as a valid and valuable resource for individuals seeking to build diverse boards to enhance nonprofit organizational success.
