Abstract
The problem is that the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) is ignoring the large potential constituency on the state’s college campuses. By ignoring this potential constituency, the agency is not meeting its goal of educating the public on historic preservation to the fullest extent and the agency is missing an opportunity to recruit people into working for preservation of the state’s cultural resources. This project was intended to develop a preservation outreach program to facilitate delivering information on the state’s historic resources as well as services offered by AHPP to the students in the history department of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). Along with providing information to the students on the cultural resources available to them in the form of the state’s historic properties, the preservation outreach program developed by this study is designed to address the cultural diversity in the UALR student body.
This development project involved eight research questions including determining and fulfilling the mission of AHPP, meeting the needs of UALR, determining appropriate material and presentation, and designing a plan for future evaluation of the effectiveness of the final product.
Twelve procedures were used in creating a preservation outreach program that fulfills the mission of AHPP and meets the needs of the UALR History Department. These procedures included identifying AHPP goals and determining if this program meets them, determining the needs of UALR, establishing and validating criteria regarding what material should included in the program, the technologies used in delivering the information, and how long the program should take to deliver the information. The procedures also included a plan for evaluating the historic preservation outreach program once it is implemented.
