Abstract

Few issues will be as important in the new millennium as the development of leaders. Character and managerial leadership competencies and skills are particularly important to those who lead the churches and Christian colleges and universities in the new era. The purpose of this applied dissertation was to create a handbook, including implementation and evaluation plans, that Asia Pacific Assemblies of God leaders can utilize for their own character and managerial development.

Six research questions guided this research. First, what broad content categories need to be addressed in the leadership development handbook? Second, within each of the categories, what issues need to be addressed in the handbook? Third, what instructions should be included in the handbook? Fourth, what format would enhance the understanding and practice of leadership development for Asia Pacific leaders? Fifth, how should the handbook be implemented in Asia Pacific? Sixth, how should the handbook be evaluated?

The development and research methodologies were used to complete the project. The seven procedures included an analysis of the literature that responded to the research questions; establishment of a formative committee that assisted in the development of the criteria for the handbook; establishment of a summative committee that reviewed, discussed, and validated the criteria; development and administration of a survey instrument; development of the handbook including the implementation and evaluation plans; review and validation of the final products by the summative committee; and submission of the handbook to the Asia Pacific Education Office Education Committee.

The results included the handbook with seven topics and 21 sub-topics, formatting and instructions guidelines, and the handbook implementation and evaluation plans. There were seven conclusions. It was concluded that leadership can be learned and that the handbook is an appropriate tool for Asia Pacific Assemblies of God leaders.

Sixteen recommendations were made. It was recommended that the handbook be used for assessment, conceptual training, and in a variety of training settings. It was also recommended that the handbook be distributed to Asia Pacific leaders and that further research concentrates on differences related to leadership cultural variables and the leader's specific environment.
