Abstract

The faculty at MedCentral Hospital School of Nursing did not know how to handle incidences of hostility and violent behavior involving students. While some of the faculty ignored or minimized threats, some took them as a danger to their safety. A protocol did not 2 exist that would give direction to the faculty and the director of the school of nursing. The purpose of the study was to develop an antiviolence policy for faculty of MedCentral Hospital School of Nursing. The research question was: "What is the appropriate form and content for an antiviolence policy for faculty of MedCentral Hospital School of Nursing?"

A review of the literature resulted in a model that could be used for an antiviolence policy in higher education and the school of nursing. Members of the formative committee created a sample antiviolence policy. Formative and summative reviews determined that criteria for the antiviolence policy for the school of nursing were valid and appropriate.

It was concluded that the antiviolence policy should provide a protocol for incidents of hostility or violent behavior of students toward faculty in the school of nursing. The antiviolence policy needs to be evaluated and reviewed periodically. It was recommended that the faculty be trained and educated about the policy. It was also recommended that further research should be conducted based on the criteria of the model utilized in this study.
