Abstract
The associate of applied science degree program in child development at Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains contains a management of early childhood programs course. The course is listed in the catalog and is required for successful completion of degree requirements. The problem was that the course had never been taught, did not have a course syllabus, and needed careful curriculum consideration prior to implementation.
The purpose of this study is to develop the course syllabus for an associate level management of early childhood programs course for delivery on the West Plains campus of Southwest Missouri State University. The research question for this study was, ''What are the essential elements of a management course syllabus for students enrolled in child and family development coursework at Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains?"
To address this question the development methodology and six procedures were completed. The six procedures included (a) analysis of literature, (b) identification of necessary course syllabus components, (c) validation of the course syllabus components, (d) revision of the course syllabus, and (e) submission of the course syllabus for adoption consideration.
Results of the development problem solving methodology were (a) solid theoretical and practical literary support for the project, (b) identification and development of essential course syllabus elements by a formative committee, (c) development of a draft course syllabus, (d) validation of course syllabus by a summative committee, and (e) submission and adoption of the course syllabus by University officials.
Six programming recommendations were made. The six recommendations related to (a) maintaining the course syllabus, (b) recording of course syllabus, (c) implementation, (d) modifications, (e) dissemination, and (f) review of literature.
