Abstract
Clinical practice guidelines are designed to assist clinicians in making the transition from research findings to evidence based practice and treatment. Many busy clinicians, however, do not have the time to read the many clinical practice guidelines available for a variety of disease and preventive Interventions. An easily accessible packet of information to promote implementation of the PHS Clinical Practice Guideline Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence was piloted In the fall of 2001. These packets were introduced to clinicians in Wisconsin clinics using an academic detailing model by the University of Wisconsin Medical School's Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention outreach staff. Response to the packets was evaluated using a written survey. The survey addressed recipient's reaction to the packet and its user friendliness.
Results of the survey indicated that recipients expressed an overall positive reaction to the packets, with all areas rated as very good or excellent. Respondents also indicated that they were Interested in or have begun to use the packet interventions in their practice. This study indicated that further evaluation of the packet should include follow-up in six months to one year to determine the extent of use In practice.
