Abstract

The problem addressed in this project was that the practicum handbook available for resort recreation management/tourism students and the site supervisor was not specific to their needs. The purpose of this study was to delineate the requirements, expectations, and format appropriate in an option specific practicum handbook. The research question for this study was: "What is the appropriate content information and format for the resort recreation management/tourism practicum handbook?"

Results from the literature review and input from the formative and summative committees supported the need for a practicum handbook specific to resort recreation management/tourism. The professional literature assisted in identifying content areas and format design that should be included. A formative committee was established to identify criteria and provide feedback during the development of the practicum handbook. The summative committee approved and validated this handbook.

It was decided that this specific option practicum handbook needed to include information related to the practicum course, responsibilities of the student, site supervisor, faculty supervisor, grade evaluation criteria, and policies and procedures relevant to the practicum course. Departmental forms needed to complete the practicum along with examples of other request forms were included in the appendix of the handbook. Specific format information such as paper weight, font size and style, the use of margins and white space was incorporated into the final product.

Revisions were made and the final version of the resort recreation management/tourism practicum handbook was submitted to the Chairperson of the Parks, Recreation and Environmental Education Department.
